I've got a huge tom sneaking around the house at night, peeing on everything. I have a mother cat and two kittens living in my carport. Last night the tom attacked the male kitten and chased off the mom. I want to trap that tom somehow. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure if it's relevant but the tom is huge, around 25 pounds. very powerful and extremely careful to not be seen when people are around. And yes, I intend to have it put down.

Cats are easy get a live trap or set up a snare, tuna is usually an irresistible bait to cats....

Avoid the snare, to great of a chance to injure a non desired specimen(like mommy cat). Cage trap with a can of tuna(as stated above) punched full of holes, should do the trick.

I think that a big burly tom like him might serve a better purpose by being neutered then turned loose in a city environment that is up to it's eyeballs in feral cats. Would he try to claim the females even if non functional, and chase off competition? As well, Chiang Mai is pretty well over ran with rats at night and he could contribute to their control. Put the bugger to work!
Thoughts?

You can neuter him yourself. Just use a tiny very strong rubber band. Have someone hold him still, place it around his prized possessions, quickly release, and get the heck out of the way. Most likely you will never see him again. When i was a kid, i helped someone do this, and you wouldnt believe how fast a cat runs away when his danglies are in trouble. Not sure how happy he will be later, but its a thought.
Round my ol stomping grounds, where men are men and sheep are nervous, thems be called elastrators. As in, "Now y'all hold still while I wrap this here rubber band round yer privates a bunch of times." I can just see the willingness to cooperate in a furious 20 pound husky tom cat.

In the period of three hours my home brew trap has corralled 3 dogs. This is turning into an animal soap opera.

It is, as a vet tech I have seen/treated animals that had elastic bands stuck on various body parts. The infection and destruction can be horrific from such a "small" thing (as in they are often lucky if they only lose a limb from it). This cat may be causing problems, but he does not deserve to be abused, no animal does, and the people that think they do disgust me.

Sorry The Snark, this part of your post made me laugh. Good luck trapping him. :)

Shell, I have often wondered about elastrators. It is the common method for docking lamb tails and castration, but is it, the commercially used heavy duty rubber band, really humane, fully effective and safe from infection? I was told the bands are impregnated with antibiotics but haven't found that confirmed.
Got another dog this AM. Old broken leg injury, mange, extreme malnutrition. I put it down. I feel like I'm taking an impromptu census of our neighborhood's stray animals.

The clinics I have worked for do not use elastrators (this includes for our large animal work, lambs included) so what I know is based off what I've been told by vets. If used correctly, by a professional they would still be a million times better than the "method" (aka abuse) suggested by catfish. If they are not infused with antibiotics (not sure, as I've only heard of how they are used, never actually used them), they could be followed up with a long acting antibiotic injection, as well as aftercare to prevent infection. Just using a regular old elastic band and leaving it on with no followup care (which is essentially what was suggested by cat), would be (and is) devastating and extremely cruel to the animal.

My family has, for 4 generations now, owned and operated a private cattle ranch here in central oklahoma...and for many years, rubber band castration has been a method, among others, that weve used quite effectively...
When done properly and monitered throughout, it is very succesful and fairly efficient.

This is absolutely the key.

Unfortunately that was not how it was suggested to do to the cat. We had a dog come in once, the owners were not sure why the paw was so swollen and infected. Turns out the daughter thinking she was making the dog "pretty" had put an elastic around the foot, being a longer coated dog nobody noticed it until it was far too late. The dog lost it's foot, and battled a pretty nasty infection for quite some time. I've also seen them on tails, ears... That was my objection to what catfish mentioned, simply snapping it really fast onto the cats testicles and letting it run away would almost definitely end badly and inhumanely for the cat. I'm certainly not objecting to the "proper" way to use elastic bands with livestock.

Shell, you got this in before mine...
I totally agree, abuse is never the answer, I think catfish was "ribbbing" a little tho..
Still, its no laughing matter.
Rubberband castration with no follow up medical treatment would be a horrible way to die.

Here is a story I was told by a primary source.

Once upon a time I heard about a bull having his legs being hoisted up and a device similar to a combination of two hammers and a garlic press being brought down with the might of Thor onto the blood vessels (or something else) of the edible parts......his front legs were on a telephone pole and his back legs were tethered to a large tow truck.......He didn't enjoy this much and with his bullish strength brought that tow truck closer.

Not saying you should do this, I just wanted to share. Live trap, get it done by a pro.

This doesn't work with cats, because cat testicles don't "dangle". They are very close to the body, and putting a rubber band around them will only serve to cause the scrotum to slough off, leaving the tissue underneath exposed to infection. Cats, unlike horses, cattle and other hoofed animals that this method of castration is frequently used on, can turn and lick and bite themselves there. Now, I am not a fan of feral cats by any means, but torturing an animal and leaving it to die a slow death of infection and gangrene, experiencing what would have to be prolonged an unimaginable pain, is unacceptable. Anyone who would find doing this to an animal to be the least bit amusing really would make me put them first on the short list of potential serial killers, given a well-established link between animal torture and killing people. One of my penny-pinching uncles did this to a Great Dane x Doberman he had, because he believed the dog would be less inclined to roam and was too cheap to pay a vet to neuter it properly, and the result was the dog disemboweling itself in its frenzy to remove the elastic castrator band, which was of course designed to be used on bull calves, not carnivores. Karma eventually stepped in, and this uncle died in his 50's with cancer rotting his intestines. If you want something dead, just shoot it with a .22 and be done. Don't mess around with pellet guns that can also lead to injuries that cause the animal to suffer horribly before dying, or risk handling an animal than can inflict serious injuries on YOU, as well as expose you to some pretty awful diseases(I'll have to infer that feral cats in Thailand are not routinely vaccinated against Rabies, and that this disease does exist in that country).

Thanks to everyone for the input. So to sum things up.

Amoeba. The modern method is to catch the bull in a 'Crush' and use what they call a bloodless castrator which severs the nerves. The animal is then kept in a holding pen and observed for indications of hemorrhage. Large bulls may occasionally have to brutally handled as you described. A vet is usually present at those shindigs and the animals owner should be instructed to never wait that long. Most often, mature bulls are anesthetized and the testicles surgically removed.

Not using elastrators on animals that can bite themselves back there makes perfect sense.

I would never do something to an animal that is to be released into the open that could cause continual pain or potential debility. If I am going to have cats or dogs altered I'll have a vet do it.

If I put animals down I make sure the bullet passes through both the central brain cavity and the spinal chord so the animal is gone before it hits the ground.

That damned tom cat is still visiting, has ignored the trap so far and is an expert at evasion and not being seen.
