I got my female about two months ago as an adult (according to the seller) from a seller online so I don't know exactly how old she is. Just that she is supposed to be an adult female and I believe she was wild caught. Earlier today, she went into one of her hideways ( a piece of corkbark wedged in a corner of her enclosure) and appeared fine. Just now, I went to check on her and she is on her back. She has water and has had food in her enclosure that she has appeared to be eating as I haven't seen the feeders I put inside for her. I don't know if she could possibly be molting or if I'm losing her. Will try to get a pic. Does anyone have any ideas or advice? Thanks in advance.

if shes on her back shes either molting or dying. my guess is passing away rather than molting. you can always check their underside for an epigynum to see if a female is mature or not, and thats a good practice when you get a new spider

if she was molting, shed be stretching, moving, trying to wiggle out of her skin. If she isnt, she is likely in a death curl.
a pic helps, but honesty, bc she was likely wc mature, she might just be ready to go. You can see if you can help her by giving her some sugar water to drink in her mouthparts. but if shes curling, its unlikely to do much but revive her for a few hours.

I was was afraid of that. I kept getting conflicting information when I tried to search online. I keep hoping she's molting, but things aren't looking good. :(

Unlike tarantulas, wolf spiders do not molt on their back.

If they are on their back ever, I don’t think it’s a good sign.

Yeah, that's how my rabid wolf spider molted. Pretty sure I'm losing my girl. I'm absolutely heartbroken. She was an early birthday present and such an awesome spider. It does make me curious why she went into her hideaway, though. She usually chills underneath her plants, but she chose her hideaway the back right corner of her enclosure.

thats really unfortunate, the best way to guarantee a quality pet is captive bred ones, its rough. I got a girl from an expo and she had a parasitic fungus and it killed her in a month. it was so horrific, and so fast. wolves arent bred as often, but i do hope you can get a pet with better health soon. im sure she was a lovely lady

I only went with wc from a seller due to not being able to find any captive bred anywhere. Everyone was out of stock and I looked for well over a month. I got her right around the start of summer and she has thrived up until now. She was an absolute gorgeous spider. I hope I can get another in the future. I just checked on her again and I've for sure lost her. Thank you for your kind words.

Pictures of my very beautiful and very much beloved Eclipse. Also, wanting to confirm that she was, in fact, a she. Sadly, my camera didn't want to cooperate in these pics so they're, unfortunately, not that great. Also, I've added a pic of her as of this morning. Is it normal for wolf spiders to move when touched or blown on while in a death curl? She turned onto her back some time yesterday while next to the cork bark under her hideaway. I removed the cork bark that she was up against. I can't see very well into her enclosure to get a very good look at her. What do you guys make of her still moving and the third pic? Thanks again. Update: She is for sure deceased and I was able confirm that she was an adult female. Rip, my beloved Eclipse.

Sorry for your loss its amazing how hard it is to lose a spider it hurts.

I hope you can find another hopefully juveniles.

I've kept and bred carolinensis many times over the past 12 years.

Another species that I fell in love with is Dolomedes tenebrosus and they can get even larger.

But yeah with those big wolf spiders eyes they are awesome.

She actually stayed alive for awhile longer after I made this post. She started moving body parts here and there. I gave her honey water whenever she would move her legs or pedipalps. She finally passed for sure a couple days ago. She was one of my favorite spiders and I still have no idea what made her go from thriving to suddenly not. I got her back in June from Underground Reptiles and she thrived for over 3 months. I would love to find a Carolina in my yard, but I kept watch around dusk and shortly after nightfall for over a month. Only Tigrosa Annexas, Pardosas, and Rabidas are in my yard.

Theres a prominent vendor that has captive bred Tigrosa babies for sale currently. I'll DM you the name of the vendor.

Any ideas what caused it? I found my girl on her back with only a few legs curling with others still sticking out. I took her out her enclosure and put her in a small container. I noticed after making my original post that she was, actually, still alive as she would move her legs, pedipalps, and/or fangs. She even pooped a few times before passing. Throughtout the whole time she was in the new container, all of her legs were sticking out and not curling. No one can give me any information about what may have been going on with her other than her just being sick.

Not sure what causes it but mine did the same thing pooped couple times more like a stream then she would kinda seize up about hour later she was gone.

It was hard on me I really enjoyed keeping her.

That sounds exactly like what happened with my girl. I literally cried over losing her. She was an awesome spider and a spider I had wanted for a while. I never got to hold her, but she was so chill. Even my bf, who hates spiders, liked looking at her and helped me with her enclosure.
