i just thought i'd share a few pics i took of a Carabid beetle i found in my garden last week. I think it is Carabus granulatus, but it might be Carabus arvensis. I love predatory beetles, they have a great way of hunting and they are one of the most active inverts around. Anyway, enjoy!

Awesome carabid, Dan! Predacious beetles are the best.

Sweet carabid. They are hard to find around here, you're lucky. Around here you do find the occasional fiery searcher though. :)

Thanks everyone. This species isn't too common where i live. I only found it because i have been setting up and collecting from 30 pitfall traps in a wheat field and my garden for my work. It's great, i've been finding all sorts of different inverts, lots and lots of Carabids, some of the traps are catching over 30 Pterostichus melanarius in one trap in one night! I also caught a huge Carabus violaceus the other day, but it died before i could photograph it.

Steven, what are the beetles in your photos?

i'm not sure but i guess Carabus auronitens that's the name they were sold by :? (You can find them on every "beetle-fair" in Belgium,.. a French guy brings them along every time,... seems to breed them well :)

Steven those pics are awesome. ;P I really need to get some more pitfall traps out soon. The majority of what I catch in the woods here are roaches though.
