"stealing an animal is a felony, "
Unless it isn't. Just to clarify, the general rule is a felony penalty is more than 1 year in prison. Less than a year can be a felony or misdemeanor. And laws vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, state by state and subject to the determination of the judge upon conviction. It can also vary depending upon the value of the animal stolen and if the offense was a first time incident of a animal of little value on up to multiple convictions of highly valuable animals.

In the jurisdiction where my Sis is a cop, farm and ranch country, law enforcement technically steals animals on occasion. An abused animal is brought to their attention, they call animal control, animal control authorizes removal or hands it back to the cops as to their best judgement.

Sis now has a small ranch, three horses, a couple of cattle and three dogs, all technically stolen. If the owner wants an animal back they have to face the music of potential animal abuse. The animal control officer is about 80 miles away and it takes some serious incident the get them out of their office and drive the distance.

Crazy who steals a snake…
Crazy or stupid or a mix of both. I had a report of an attempted burglary. Someone broke into an office of a wood working shop, The private office was locked up tight. So the perp ransacked the shop using an assortment of tools to try to hack through the inner office door. Apparently s/he failed and left.
There was nothing of value and only about $70 in cash in the inner office. But the tools the perp tried to cut through the door included a $1700 lathe set which was left on the floor.
Makes me wonder if these people can walk and chew gum at the same time.

that reminds me of something my dad told me about

apparently a thief once broke into our cellar and stole a flex steel saw (that had almost seriously injured him) and left a large boltcutter that he is much happier with :)

the saw has probably been out of comission for two decades, while the boltcutter is good as new

sometimes thieves arent the brightest
