“This has literally been the worst day of my life. Well, maybe not the worst, but it’s definitely, by far the most disgusting,” Colette Reynolds said in a viral TikTok video, showing Mormon crickets gathered all around her home — on the pavement, the walls, and in the grass. “I’m legitimately petrified to go back inside because they’re there and they jump on you,” she said, calling the bug invasion “absolutely foul.”

A little overblown? That TikToker says they cause depression and anxiety. She feels super violated. I call it, "The best day over."
Slightly. I mean I'm sure it could be traumatic for someone with a severe phobia but they're just grasshoppers in the end. But hey, why write "grasshoppers" when you can write "cannibalistic creatures" and, oh my goodness, now no one will know what the heck kind of creature we're talking about so now they just HAVE to click the article/video and find out!

You can smell them on hot days cooking on the pavement. One time, on the way up to Hells Canyon, there were so many crossing the street at a time that it looked like a freshly paved road. And that was for like 2-3 miles driving through brush fields. You know it's really bad when you got to be careful about hydroplaning crickets.

Damn my morbid curiosity, but I have to ask: do they smell good cooking? Or is it icky?

These people are afraid of a cricket ? Cmon man..
If I lived there I’d be filing up buckets of them imagine getting crickets that big to breed in captivity be a dream . It would be like paradise crickets flying and hoping all over .
We need peaceful army of cricketers ☝ ! Not cannibalistic ones!

It smelled like a YMCA sauna filled with cattle. I imagine almost all of the humidity making up the thick air I was breathing came off the dead crickets covering the road.

Oh. I see. For some unknown reason I imagined it would smell quite nice. I'm terribly sorry you had to breathe that stench.

More intelligent countries than most haha. even if one is just grossed out, use that protein to feed the animals species the people do enjoy. Fish, shrimp, hogs, chickens, ducks etc :) Frankly, the chitin to mean ratio is kinda lousy, but it's a great supplement to AG feedstuffs!

There is always a glass half full idea when disasters strike ;)

From an Associated press article that I just read.

"Residents were left reeling after tens of thousands of Mormon cricket eggs, once buried an inch beneath the soil, began to hatch in May and June, the AP reported, leaving behind a stench so horrible the town smelled like burning flesh."

There you have it, burning flesh is what it smells like. lol.
