this was found on my sister in law's screen door, in Aloha Oregon, just west of Portland. She's never seen anything this large, so she took a pic for me to put up here in hopes that we can find out what it is....

Prionidae

Its a long horn beetle (Cerambycidae) of the genus Prionus, sub-family Prionidae. This species usually reaches around 2" in length not including antenna. There is a species (Titanus giganteus) in South America of the same sub-family that looks somewhat the same, but reaches over 6" in length and is one of the worlds largest insects.

I'm a little late, but for what it's worth it appears to be a male. Females are even larger, with huge distended abdomens, but with smaller antennae.

Agreed, it is definately a male. Females' abdomens bulge out past the tip of the elytra.

!!!!

Immortal, I thought you'd been snapping photos outside my apartment again ;P

I found one of these suckers the other night on the opposite coast (Charlotte NC), caught (dang thing was whacking into my window) let it sit in my room (it was basking on a towel by a black light) for a night then i let it go...couldnt find an ID in the audobon bug book (needing to replace that as my reference i think..) But figured it was some kind of longhorn beetle.

It apparently had an attraction to the blacklight (one of my insect enthusiast friends told me to put a blacklight up to keep it from flying around at night and to calm it) and it tried to BITE the hell out of me when i picked it up. Upon release i noticed its abdomen was doing a wierd pulsating thing like a mantises does when it lays eggs. Its abdomen went a bit past its elytra as well so maybe it was female?

Prionus

Yeah, the Prionidae are awesome beetles. Im currently keeping a 1.5" male Prionus californicus. The hissing/stridulating noise they make when disturbed is another trademark (although this is a feature with many other beetles as well).

Yeah they are cool beetles. I've caught a few so far this year. They smell nasty also. Well.... when you disturb them.

Prionids also love cantelope in captivity. I'v had specimens spend nearly 3 days attached to a single piece of cantelope never once leaving it.
