This critter has made its home on an old potted plant "wiskey barrel", and is chillin under the lip of the plastic insert. My guess is it's a type of huntsman or wolf spider, but I am not all that well read on spiders. I'm from south central PA if that helps at all. Thanks!

(There is also a tiny 1/8 inch yellow spider that made a 10 inch web across the barrel opening, very cool for such a little guy.)

Looks like a grass spider species.

Possibly an Agelenopsis sp.

It's somewhat small, only about an inch legspan, these are pretty common here in Pa, mainly in bushes though.

And yes I agree it's most likely a Agelenopsis aperta.

I just checked the range, from Texas to Cali. So if it's not that, what is it? A close relative? Because it's the right size, right coloration, and right web for the Agelenopsis aperta. I kinda wonder if it wandered out of the local grocery store after hiding in a crate/skid?

It is most likely another grass spider species, either from Agelenopsis or another genus. While it is possible it was introduced, I doubt it.

there are lots and lots of species that look very very similar to each other. it's a minority, i think, that you can easily ID just by glancing at, w/o a lot of experience with the genus/family.

No doubt this guy is a bit of a mystery for me, and I am in no way any sort of expert on them. So I'll just let him be, unknown and outside my back door, eating all those little peskies that fly around. Maybe he will add more to his web soon, although it's already about a metre across!
