I found this in a backyard of a relative. I brought it home to take some pictures of it and keep it for awhile. I did a breif search for it on the net but cannot find anything.

The main abdomen looks silverish with yellow, black and green markings. I found it here in Connecticut on a web between trees.

Anyone know why the abdomen looks soooo big?

Anyone know what it is?

Oh, that's easy. In florida they're all over the place, they're "Banana spiders."

No way. Nephila clavipes is commonly referred to as the "Banana Spider" or "Golden Silk Spider". Yes you are right about them being found in Florida, however, what you have in the picture doesn't quite look like a Nephila.

Are you sure about that?

Because I swear same markings and everything.

But then again, maybe someone a while ago mixed them up and nicknames got mixed.

Wait yeah, you're right, I just looked it up on google.

But the ones on google didn't look like the spiders i see every day that i thought were banana spiders.

My mistake.

There are a bunch of those in PA as well, I've walked into may of their webs... But they are good at escaping... I always find them running on the ground afterwards... Scientific name is Leucage sp.

Common names are often shared by two entirely unrelated creatures. Nice looking spider. Not something I've ever seen in southern California.

Hello guys,

It is not a Nephila clavipes but it seems to be of the same family(Tetragnathidae). I have some Nephila webs in my porch. Here it is tasting a delicious giant bee (Bombus sp)

I think the name "Bannana spider" reffers to the Brazilia Wandering Spider (Phoneutria sp). I' ve just captured a nice specimen in my back yard. Here is some photos

Thank you pal!

I'm almost sure that it is a P. nigriventer. The others are not found in my area.

It is young and I don't know the gender yet.

take a look at other neighbors I've been spotting around

Normaly I keep them just to take some shots, observe for a couple of days and release them where I found it. In the case of the phoneutria I intend to wait for a moult and then take it to release in a less inhabited area.

Welcome to the community Fabio, wonderful pics of a rarely seen spider in the culture, I love your relocation of residence invaders, it's both fair and safe for spider and human alike. No need for unwarranted destruction of a fascinating creature like this.

Phoneutria fera are also commonly called "banana" spiders, because they are not-so-often found in shipments of bananas from Brazil, so yes, you are right. And as somebody else said, common names are often shared between different species.
