"Camel spider" article

I just had to share. I laughed the entire time...
http://www.buckstix.com/camelspider.htm

The best part is, " BIG ENOUGH TO EAT CATS & DOGS & KILL COWS & HORSES ."
I really, really hope this is a joke.
Contains graphic images. (Of wounds)
What other crazy stories and myths have you heard about Arachnids?

this type of article just spread mass hysteria about the solifugids and arachnids alike. they ARE NOT "camel spiders".

Keep fingers crossed. If Fox News relays this info the majority of Americans will believe it.

The stories are just hilarious. This has to be a joke, at least the stories are.

"...because just like spider eggs, water can cause them to hatch."
What.

The problem is, for someone that doesn't know much about camel spiders (like myself) this is all pretty believable. Except for the part about water hatching the eggs lol. Now that's just silly.

I agree with you all. Reading something like this if I was unknowledgeable would be terrifying. Hopefully people won't get to hear about this from any news station. The reactions would be ridiculous.

Come on people, they're selling Camel Spider T-shirts with 2 free C.S. "eggs", its obviously meant in jest...
"I spent 11 months in Iraq with my fiancé (now wife) and we brought home a camel spider that we kept as a pet. It was so cute and is actually potty trained. It grew from just a few inches to about a foot long (I saved all of it’s skins). We let it sleep with us in our bed—just like a puppy. Recently, my wife developed a lump on the left side of her abdomen. The doctors agreed that it was benign (basic cyst). A dermatologist at the Mayo clinic lanced it and found several marble-sized eggs and a live, baby spider.

Now, we have a beautiful daughter (spider) named Shadow. My wife feels blessed to have been the surrogate mother and the two of them (Hungry and Shadow) are part of our family. Today I found a lump on the inside of my mouth—what a joy!!"

Besides, wearing a Three Wolf Moon shirt will protect you from Camel Spiders. :sarcasm:

Those are also Naja bites, I just can't remember where I saw them before. Is it just me or are the eggs caramel popcorn?

My boyfriends brother did a tour in Iraq with the National Guard, and he's terrified of all things that aren't a dog or a cat. I've seen him educate people about camel spiders the best that he can by just telling them what isn't correct about what they do. He apparently didn't see a lot over there, but the ones he did scared him. I keep threatening to buy his daughter one as a pet.

Edit: This is almost like Drop Bears. It seems most people understand that it's false and it's a joke. Like the Aussie Zoo's that have informational pages on drop bears with "testimony" from people who have been attacked.

Alot of those "can kill a cat, etc" claims are actually based on large solifugids eating carrion. It's quite common to see large solifugae scavenging off of roadkill.

That myth is based on male koalas attacking people on roadsides which DOES happen- they will use their powerful arms to defend themselves. Koalas on low branches are actually pretty dangerous, too, because that's their element, and they CAN jump on you from a low branch.. Even if they dont bite you, those claws can mess you up. They look nice because everyone sees captive koalas, ahaha. Wild koalas are mean, they'll make a ticking sound if you get too close, they behave kinda like reptiles, it's so weird. But yeah, a group dropping down on people? lmao hell no. They can also deliver a very painful bite, having dentition like a giant rodent.

Lol, this reminds me of the simpsons, there's an episode where they go through a zoo, and Apu's like: "These animals sure do act differently at night", and there's a group of koalas eating a zebra..lmao

My brain has become transfixed on potty training an arachnid. I'm visualizing the other here to be explaining a litter box to a huntsman some morning.

Well..umm.. You should propably read about triops eggs.
First of all, triops are aquatic animals and are crustaceans, not arachnids. Secondly, not only have I done extensive reading about them and their life cycles, I have actually owned them at one point.

Edit: still an interesting read. Thank you for sharing.

True. I was just saying I don't find it so silly that even an arachnid could have a "safety" in its eggs to make them hatch during the rain season.

True, but since most arachnids (especially spiders and tarantulas) aren't aquatic, it wouldn't make much sense for them to have the same mechinism as triop eggs. As for the rainy season, it wouldn't really matter since T's can go months without eating anyways and most species that need a lot of water and humidity live in humid climates anyways. Besides, it is pretty much common knowledge that spiders don't need water to hatch, which makes it downright silly for those of us who are even more well informed. :)

Don't forget there is one aquatic species of spider, the diving bell spider, truly an amazing and highly specialized animal!!!! :D

Haha!, that article makes me think again about how easy it is to let other people think for us. Think of how much easier it is to process somebody else's thoughts saying, "...yeah, yeah, I see what you mean..." imo we need to be careful of letting other people's thoughts get in the way of thinking on our own. Others thoughts actually block our own, I think more than we know. It's called "the power of suggestion" that people use to manipulate, esp. media like Snark was implying. I guess it's our social nature too, fitting in and following the masses, could be a social genetic thing to agree with somebody so fast. I just recently heard a small example, the media reported that there was "new information" on Edward Snowden. The information was that fed Mark Rogers was speculating that Snowden was working for the Russians as a spy. lol that's not information, that's only somebody speculating and guessing about somebody else.

This came to me through several people. A soldier in Iraq remembered an incident where some soldiers on patrol came across a 'camel spider'. Various comments were made on how horrific the beast was. He recalled, you had about 20 soldiers armed with automatic weapons and two trained attack dogs expressing their sentiments about how dangerous the animal appeared. The soldiers dealt with the imminent threat with a burst from one of their rifles. Is it me or is this just ever so slightly ironic?
