Hello everyone,
Back in 2023, when I was first getting into the arachnid hobby, I wanted to make sure that any species I was dealing with were safe. So, naturally, I searched up the venom levels of some Bay Area scorpions.
Well, this website was the first search result for many of my local species. Let's just say it's a bunch of frass.
Now I actually took this seriously at first, but I soon realized that this page was utter rubbish. I'm actually working on getting it changed as it is incredibly frustrating when crazy misinformation like this becomes the top search result on the internet.
Unfortunately, this site illustrates how some pest control companies will use misinformation to cause fear so people will use their services to try and kill more of these animals. It's another example of how companies and media in general manipulate the fear in us to exercise control and make some money.
Reminds me of another post by fellow user @Ultum4Spiderz about a media article sensationalizing some harmless orbweavers:
For anyone reading this who's new to the hobby and/or lives in the Bay Area: there are no medically significant scorpions native to our region. And none of the scorpions listed on that website are dangerous barring allergic reactions; it is an outright lie.
That doesn't mean you can go and manhandle the scorpions, but it does provide a good lesson to always evaluate the source of any information. Check the facts.
Thanks, and stay vigilant.
