Hi all,

My Versicolour sling molted last night (lowkey sad I missed it) I just wanted to ask/confirm a few questions and ideas.

  1. A lot of the info online seems to be towards terrestrial species, saying keep the water dish full, I keep his full but I’ve never seen him anywhere near it. Instead I’ve been putting drops of water on his web and the surrounding bark and leaf. Can I still do this? Or will it disturb him.
  2. Right now he seems to be in a stress position, with all his legs tucked up with him, he is alive as I’ve seen him move his legs but how long will it take for him to return to normal
  3. A lot of the info is also directed towards adults or juveniles and it’s quite hard to find sling molt info. How long until I can feed him? Is it still around 1-2 weeks or more or less because of his size

Anyway, I am really happy he molted successfully even if he is still tiny!

1. What you're doing is fine. You can also stick the water dish on the side and above the ground using a glue gun.

2. Leave it alone. About a week or so.

3. A week

I'm pretty sure there are already tons of information about slings here. Especially, about this species.

The water drops on the web can even be the prefered method. Some c versicolor never really get around the bowl because they are used to sucking water in their webs, leaves.

you could puy a bowl on the ground anyways. But an elevated one would be better.

some very talented members, carved thick bark to make a hole that fits the water bowl. So the bowl doesnt get glued. Which can make cleaning a problem.

especialy when a person wants to control the moisture levels in substrate. Around a humidity sensitive species.

You feed when the fangs are darkened.

it will be ready when its done. This can be a week, or a few. Youll get the hang of it.

for small slings people usualy wait atleast a week. They can harden quicker then adults. But every spider is an idividual. We need to be patient and respect the process.

feed to soon and you can get it spooked. It will go and hide for a while.

i often leave a prekilled after hardening waiting period. Just in case what i thought was hardened, isnt just quite. This way, there isnt a struggle, and spider will not rush for the kill.

sling info is very basic. All slings will be similar, on many levels, until they reach a certain size.

its more complicated around uncommon species, because we don’t always know if they need more or less moisture. Some slings can actualy do well on dryer then wet.

when in doubt, if the board is overwhelming and youre struggling to search the right “words”, tom moran and daves little beasties cover most of the common tarantulas in the tarantula keeper world.

Tom moran has a sling care video that covers all basics.
