I decided to rehouse my 2 C. Elegans slings today. They had gotten big enough to be moved, and it seemed appropriate that the Ts with the heart shape markings on their abdomens get rehoused on valentines day. They are probably about 1/3 inch in LS now (way up from the 1/8 inch LS they were when I got them), and were in vials that are only about 2/3-3/4", so I set up new homes in my 1 1/4 inch bead jars for them.
These guys are still TINY though! Moving them was way tricky because they can't really be picked up easily, and they burrow. I managed to tease Freyja out of her(or his, too small to know) burrow and convince her to make a dash into the other enclosure pretty easily, but Aphrodite was a problem...she came out of the old one, and dashed into the new home, then up and over the side in a blink. She ended up sitting on the side, but as soon as I tried to coax her into the jar again she bolted off of it. Luckily I had everything inside a kritter keeper, so I was able to keep her contained. 20 minutes of chasing her around with a tiny paint brush I finally managed to get her to climb into the vial and got it closed. For something that tiny she manages to move very speedily!
Anyways, here are a few pictures of the little ones. They already have their patterns! I need a better macro camera to get better pictures of them, but these weren't too horrible. Enjoy!
Aphrodite on the lid - the holes are 3/64 of an inch!
Freyja in her new home - my index finger is there to show you how these guys could easily sit on a finger tip!
Freyja in her new home, this shot came out pretty well. The top of the substrate is a bit more damp than the rest of it, so its kind of refelctive.
