Hi

I have decided to buy my first T have sat down and made my list
I do not intend on handling it as it will be for display only. I came up
with a list I would like opinions from people on the board as to what they
think

I definitely think I will have to mail order from dealers as local pet shop is way expensive and they are not very helpful at all...

1. Grammostola Pulchra Brazilian Black

2. B.Albopilosum Honduran Curly Hair

3. L Parhybhana Salmon Pink Bird Eater

4. A.Avicularia PinkToe

5. P.Metalica Gooty Saphire

6. P. Murinus OBT

This is pretty much the order I want to buy them and this would be my complete collection. I live in Canada so these can be hard to come by and may have to wait to get this done in particular due to colder weather approaching making shipping an issue.

I know the Avic is kind of weird with being in the middle however I feel that it would be better to start with NW Terrestrial T vs an Arboreal

I have done some research on the net about these but any and all advice and input would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds like you have some cash to spend--P. metallicas and G. pulchras aren't cheap (even as slings). If it were me I'd go with the P. metallica if I could afford it followed by P. murinus (OBT--you have to have at least one with a poor attitude) and L. parahybana (every collection needs something big). Personally, I don't have the patience to wait for something to grow (not to mention it could turn out to be a male). I'd buy adults if you can afford it. In fact, I'd rather go with fewer Ts but get adults, but that's just me.

this would be my complete collection.
Don't bet on it ;)

Other than that, your list looks great if that's what you think you want. Those are all really good choices. The P. metallicas are a bit spendy and a bit more difficult than anything else on your list. You could sub that out for something like P. cambridgei or P. irminia, but you don't have to if you really want the metallica.

More specific advice will be easier to give if you could let us know what size you plan on purchasing them at. However, if you've aready done research, there is nothing out of the ordinary regarding care for any of these....

Growth rate is a factor you should keep in mind as well. The first two on your list are also the slowest growing. G. pulchra in particular grows very, very slowly. If you buy a sling it will be years before you even start seeing adult coloration. B. albopilosum isn't as slow as that but it's not really a speedy grower either. It can be frustrating to have this tiny little thing as your only tarantula so i'd reccomend, for your own enjoyment, that you get the L. parahybana or maybe the P. murinus early on so you have something that you can actually see grow.

All in all those are good choices. I do, however second Scotty's remark; yeah right. Don't you know this isn't a hobby so much as an addiction?

I suggest you request to join the Canadian forums. LOTS of dealers there that dont have a website, as well as some individuals who have the occassional breeding projects.

From the list you provided, I see no specie thats too difficult to get from the individuals in the forum.

My opinion ( Based on good and bad experience) I'd start with # 2 and then go to # 4. Just starting off you'll get to enjoy terrestrial and arboreal T's. Get a feel for the differences in husbandry , without a big investment. You'll have several questions so as you feel more confident add to your collection ( stopping is the hard part LOL ) Good luck and have fun. Kevin

G.pulchra will grow soooo slow your grandchildren will get to watch the maturing molt lol and are fairly expensive even as slings ..... P.metallica even as slings are incredibly expensive .... I tbh IMHO would not really recommend getting an OBT as one of your first T's ... sling or not... they are incredibly fast and even a bite off a sling will prove nasty... The LP are fast growing and rewarding ... B.albopilosum I don't personally know if these are slow groing or not as mine I got as sub adult female 6 months ago ... she has molted twice in my care and is now definitely at adult size ....

TBH if you get just slings for your first T's you may end up getting a little bored of waiting for them to grow... maybe you should chose a larger T in the collection ( one of species considered docile) so you have a larger T with full adult coloration to look at and admire... I would also recommend getting a A. geniculata ... but that is my personal preference... and a B.smithi is a must to any collection lol

Whatever you choose I wish you good luck

And .. btw... these wont be your only T's ... you will get seriously addicted and end up getting more ...... and more..... and more ...... and will start working out how much of your next pay and the pay after that you can utilize to spend on T's.... be warned lol .... And this is coming from someone who bought a G.rosea to get over her fear/arachnophobia on Jan 22nd 2009 and now has 39 T's and still wants MORE MORE MORE!!!! (and is going to get more more more!!!) lol :)

That's a tough list! Like a lot of people on here have said, don't start off with something slow growing. The Parahybana would be fun for sure and simple to take care of. I love OBT's but mine is a heavy webber and I don't get to see him much (he's fun to feed though). Pokie's grow pretty quickly and I'm having a blast raising my P. miranda. It's molted three times in 2 months and has doubled in size and has very nice color. My Avicularia metallica is pretty boring, like super, but my Avicularia versicolor is a great eater and molts often and the same goes for my Avicularia diversipes, although that one's considerably faster. I gotta say I think an overlooked T is definitely the Brachypelma vagans. They're super cheap and grow very very fast and are great eaters and the adult colors are goreous! I know I mentioned some that aren't on that list and I'm not trying in the slightest to be rude. I just want your first couple to be as rewarding as possible. Good luck and be sure to show pics of what you get!

Curly Hair imo, most practical and affordable of the above mentioned lised. Congrats though in whatever you choose.
