Can anyone give me advice on litterbox training bunnies? I am getting one today (a friend had a litter and they turned 4 wks old on Monday...she wants to give me one). I want to be able to let it roam my room a little bit while I am home to watch it.

Is it easier to deal with a male or a female? It's a mini rex cross. I'll have pics tonight. :) In the mean time, I'm going to do some online research.

Thanks!

Since they pick a corner and go, put the litter box in that corner, and put some of their "business" in it. That always did the trick for me. It doesn't matter male or female, but if you have any wires or anything that is within rabbit height expect it to get munched. There are sprays like sour apple and such that is supposed to stop it, but they rarely work so only supervised free roams only please. I'd rather not read a thread about how you got BBQ bunnie because munched your wires.

Yeah, she'll never been loose without supervision. She is in a nice, roomy cage in my room. It's a huge tub with a screen top. She has lots of toys, some timothy hay, a litter box, and her pellet food. Her breeder gave me a list of safe fruits and veggies to feed.

I got her! Pics to follow. Anyway, she's a female brindle rex...kinda marked like a calico cat. She's completely adorable and tolerates handling really well.

Your bunny is just too darn cute.

spaying or neutering will drastically increase chances of litter box training. I have three bunnies now, two female, one male. One female is intact, the other two buns are fixed. the intact female has been impossible to litter box train. I still offer her a box, but she just goes wherever she feels like going anyways. the other two are near perfect with their potty habits.

Most vets require that bunnies be around 6 months to spay or neuter, though I've found some that will do it at around 3-4 months.

Thanks for the advice. :) I do plan on spaying her in 4 months or so. She's just a baby now. And yeah, she is sooo unbelievably cute. She really takes handling well, too. :)

the eziest way to litter train them is to put some hay in thier litter box and then they will eat it and poop :-D eventually they will just go there becuase they tend to go in the same place most of the time. a way to keep them in this routine is to always move waste from unwanted places and put it where you want it i.e. litter box. also if the rabbit does poop or pee somewhere you dont want it to plz dont strike it or yell at it this will only hurt your cause and make the bunnie fear you. because rabbits arent really pack animals they do not share the need to please that a dog has and therefore will not understand punishment. hope this helps.

ps its really just patience :p gl

You may want to consider getting your bunny a friend. We got our pair of mini-rexes from this place:

http://www.rabbithaven.org/

The lady that runs it(20 years now?) was relunctant to part with just one as she believed that this breed does much better in captivity with a friend. Good luck!

If you get 2, make sure you neuter/spay them both. Or there will be a dominance issue. If you want a bunny that stays tiny then get a dwarf species. They're also extra cute.

You will notice that rabbits are very clean animals, and will only poo in selected corners. Mine doesn't pee when he's out of the cage. I managed to train him to avoid cables, stay on carpets and chairs without leaving and walk on a leash. If you love 'em enough it is possible to train them. ;)

Clearly you didn't read through the thread. But thanks for the advice all the same.

She is already litter trained and will be spayed when she is old enough.

It depends on the bunnie. My mom's method was to pick up the bunnie droppings and put it in the litter box, it worked for our 2 netherland dwarfs.
