So I bought a Green Lynx about a month ago, and yesterday she laid an eggsac.

Does anyone know...

Will she start eating again and survive, or is she just gonna die now that she laid it, Shes horribly skinny and hanging on/guarding the eggsac.

Anyone know how many babies they have? I saw the thread a few threads down with photos of a wild lynx with babies, it looked about 50, but its so hard to tell when they are in a clump like that.

Any ideas on how many days from the egg sac being laid to it hatching?

And when the babies are born, will they cannibalize each other?

I've got a sac too. Not sure what I'm going to do with it. I think normally, the female dies ..old age, gets cold, and the babies over-winter in the sac, come out in the Spring. I'm not sure though.

Hmmm if the babies do indeed winter over in the sac, It would be feasible to maybe put the sac in the fridge for the time being, so I could hatch it later at a more appropriate time. I know this can be done with native mantid egg sacs.

Being the Green Lynx distribution is Southern US (and further south?), I had assumed it stayed warm enough in most areas that they could be active all year round?

I've brought these in before and raised the babies through until spring.

Babies will hatch in a couple weeks (I didn't keep track). In central NC, they hatch in the fall in the wild and live as spiderlings through the winter.

The mother will eat again if you put in a feeder. If a cricket or roach, I would cripple it by crunching the thorax before feeding to be safe.

I kept the spiderlings communally in a 32 oz delicup. They ate fruit flies and I did not notice a drop in population. I had around 100, so I can't say there was no cannabalism. After a couple months, you will see what I assumed was sex distinct sizes. Cannabilism may increase at that point, but I sold off or let them all go at that point.

If you separate the mother from the spiderlings, she will lay a second sac. That sac will only yield a handful of spiderlings. A bunch of webbing appears when the spiderlings hatch. Not sure if that is the mother or the spiderlings, but I kept the mothers with the sacs until after the hatch for that reason.
