Heh, pretty much what finman31 said. These things thrive on neglect. :) I use waterbites for mine and throw in scraps of food and they will breed like crazy - even kept at room temperature!

If you have a large colony you may be able to breed SOME of your females, but I think you are going to need Temps of at least low 80s to get a good breeding going.

Can you be more specific about room temperature? The term "room temperature" can mean something different to everybody. My room temperature runs about 80 degrees year round whereas my father's house is about 68 degrees year round. I like my house a little warmer whereas his house is always like an icebox. So yes you can raise them at room temperature in my house but; you would need extra heat for them at room temperature at my dad's house. Sorry to be nit picky.

I have room temperature set at 74 degrees F,and have never had a problem Hissing roaches(6 ended up being 1000 within 1 year),B Discoidales(13 became hundreds within a few months) or lobsters(N. Cinerea).A friend threw some in on trade and I have only had them a few months,i gave most of them back to him, keeping out 6 adults hoping I had males and females. All i know is now I have around a hundred from those 6 that I have had maybe 2 months.I keep them in a 10 gal aquarium, with eggcrate stacked, and fish food, bannanas, dry dog food, and carrots to eat. I have reduced all my roaches down to 20 of each (again!) but I know within a few months they will be spitting babies out like mad.

"Room temperature" is generally considered to be about 72F (give or take a degree).

I don't think it can be too warm for roaches as long as they have a source of water and are not catching on fire. {D

For those who ask about breeding dubia at approx. room temp., I am trying a colony of them and E. prosticus at about 75-78 degrees F. I can see almost all of the femal dubia are gravid and will hopefully give birth soon. I don't think the temp stops them from breeding as much as it slows the whole process of maturing and birthing down a whole lot.

My house is anywhere between 72-74 at any given time. If this is not enough can I use a reptile heating pad placed under the tank?

I keep my house at 74. My hissers breed just fine, and so do my lobsters. My dubias are breeding very little by comparison. I am almost certain that raising the temp is going to be necessary to get these to thrive.
Hope this helps.

My dubia were not breeding even at 80 degrees. I had to put a heat mat under the aquarium, now they are breeding like mad. And the lobsters are out of control with a heat mat!

Well the info should be useful for any UK lurkers. In the meantime, there's that handy little 'location' entry in your profile. ;)

I'm not lurking. If you're interested in lobsters as a food source I'd suggest you also look into lateralis a.k.a Red Runners -an appropriate name- I just got some and besides the speed they are a lot easier to control. Though I wouldn't recommend trying to take adult males out of their cage as they can flutter. I got a hundred sub-adults three weeks ago and since they started maturing last week they females have been producing ootheca like a production line, another week and I expect to see the next generation
