so I have an odd question, has anybody ever tried breeding a mantis after they have laid there first ootheca and, if so, what were the results? Is there a possibility that it could lead to the second ootheca becoming fertile? Or is all hope lost after the first is laid? The reason I ask is that I had a female ghost who laid her first before my mail was fully adult. I wanted mate them when he was ready but I wasn't sure if it would work? Totally unrelated to any of this she passed away before I had a chance to try this.

You can still get her to mate after she's already produced a fertile or infertile ootheca. They're receptive to mating after becoming sexually mature and there's no reason they would cease to be able to receive sperm and produce fertilized eggs after laying an infertile ootheca.

They also store some of their sperm, so while you may have lost your male while breeding, she still may produce several more viable ooths after mated.

I actually did breed them after she laid her first ooth. You can mate mantids as many times as you want, as long as there are enough males to go around.

I always say breed again after each ooth. If not, breed her as many times as you can. A good 2-3 matings will leave almost all ooths viable :)
