Its on NGChannel, EARTHPULSE.

they're talking about the illegal pet trade in Mexico, so of course, many many many many many shots of small, medium, large and extra large Brachypelmas.

They're with this girl who seems to be an arachnologist down there.

as for the rest of the show, they say they're going to be in the field studying these guys, which means 20 more minutes of T's on TVs.

its crazy, on the street of Mexico City, these people sell Tarantulas in plastic bags... they used to be shipped like that, but being KEPT like that?!

anyways
just in case anyone cares :)

wild caught Bracs are illegal, its a violation of CITES. i guess theres not a lot of Bracs left in mexico for them to maintain a natural environment, or something like that.

i was wondering if Montezuma's Revenge takes its toll on Ts? would a T shipped to a hobbiest in Mexico be able to use their water?

Would Montezuma's Revenge for a tarantula mean it would produce solid bowel movements? :D

Hi Dave,
Was it Martha Yanez??? She's a real nice girl and a good taxonomist too. I've talked to her a few times regarding Pepsis and Hemipepsis spp. wasps. She's now living in Australia.

Cheers,
Steve

Hardly. Brachypelma of no variety was ever shown to actually be threatened. It came down to getting caught up in an avalanche of do-goodiness gone wrong. The B. smithi was the G. rosea of imports in its day; the logic went since we're importing a lot of them, they must be threatened, so they banned their import/export. Someone pointed out the similarly attractive Brachypelmas in Mexico and they banned them as well.

Mexico followed our lead and just banned invert exports from Mexico.

The truth is that the only threat to Ts in 99.9% of the situations is environment loss, which CITES doesn't address. In most cases, the 'protection' from CITES is actually a prolonged death sentence for the species if they're not already established in the hobby or smuggling continues.

I don't know if it's illegal to sell them within Mexico, CITES and the Lacey Act only come into play if they come accross the boarder.

Hey Steve

Yes, it was Martha Yanez!!! She's pretty cute too!

It's cool, she basically started her own study of spiders, since she couldn't find anywhere to do it...

very interesting show, i must say!! And tons of gratuitous shots of wild Ts, so... ;)

Considering that we import something like 50,000 WC G. rosea a year for the cheap pet trade, probably WCs by a large margin.

OTOH, if you start talking *our* version of the hobby, I think the balance shifts in favor of CB for many species.

Hey never-

i checked and it seems to be going right through the series again, so probably not for a while. At least not for the next 6 weeks.

it ended up not being FULLY about T's, but that Martha Yanez woman does some mighty cool research.

search for EARTHPULSE.. it was the episode about Illegal Pet Trade in Mexicao and Prairie Dogs ;)
