Here a few photos that I shot last new years when I visited Torrey Pines State Park in San Diego. These were very abundant there. After I was able to coax the spider out for the pictures I put it back in the burrow. The pictures were with my film slr and had to be scanned, so the quality isn't that great. Anyways, enjoy the pics.

peace,
Bobby

That definitely looks like a B. californicum and it being from San Diego area makes that an almost positive ID in my opinion.

Brent Hendrixson said the H. theveneti are quite similar to B. cali' in looks and burrows, i think

i'm surprised you could tease on out of the burrow like that. they usually would rather die than come out.

edit:
nice pics, btw.

also, ifyou are every in the SD/SoCA area maybe you could let scabies know and we could all get together for a hike or to hang out or something
http://scabies.myfreeforum.org/forum36.php <-- you can post there to let us know if you are going to be in the area

You look for the 'D' shaped lids.

Once you have seen them they become fairly easy to find in the right places. You just have to pay attention.

Thanks for all the compliments. It took a little work to get the spider out without destroying the burrow 8) After a while she just bulldogged the twig I was using and held on. Once I had her near the top of the burrow I used another twig and very gently nudged her from behind. It took a lot of patience but it was worth it in the end.

@SpyderMacFly- Once you find one, they become pretty easy to find. You just need to get a search image. Finding the first one is the trick. Like What said, look for the D-shaped lids.

@Cacoseraph- Next time I'm out there visiting my buddies I would love to get out and do a little searching with Scabies. There are so many mygales that I would love to see over in CA. You don't happen to ever stumble across Hexurella or Megahexura do you?

only in my dreams

twice now i have seen a spider i think was a relatively tiny non-thera myg. the first time was just about the first time i ever hunted and when i was still weak in general husbandry principles. i kept that dude (~1.5cm DLS. ~0.5-0.75cm BL) for a couple months before i bad husbandried it to death. i saw another one at a different area but it got away from me.
