Bonsai trees are members of the juniper family...at least the type I'm thinking of putting in a platymeris tank are.

Does anyone know if the juniper family has the trepeniod toxins that are well known in the pine/cedar family?

Juniper does produce terpenoids. I can't tell you exactly which ones and if they are dangerous to platymeris or not in an enclosed environment.

I would try a diffent type fo bonsai, prefereably broadleaf, as most conifers produce plenty of aromatic compounds. I had a nice one at home- small leaves, straight woody stem, a few thorns though. I'll get the species later when I get home.

bonsai can be any type of tree or bush. The term bonsai means dwarfing of a tree by trimming the roots and shaping the branches.

Junipers are the most typical plant that are made into bonsai, but since it would be indoors I would go with a tropical plant , like a ficus which was mentioned, or a jade plant would make a neat one as they are succulents and don't need as much water, although they need brighter light.

Got the name
Pithecellobium flexicaule

I would show a pic of mine, but I've been neglecting it and am not proud of its condition at the moment.

A bonsai mullberry, I have to see that, even more amazing if it grew flowers and fruit.

I just found out my parents are huge fans of black cherries...I may give this a try, as well :)

That's exactly what this thread is missing! Everybody is chiming in about what bonsais they've created, and yet we still have NO PICTURES!

Juniper are outdoor bonsais. If you keep it indoors it will surely die. I speak from experience.
