Hi all,
I just acquired a juvenile unsexed G.Pulchra yesterday from someone selling it on Craigslist.I was told it just molted about a week ago.The T looks pretty healthy, but seems pretty sketchy.I got the T home, checked on it cause it was inside it's hide, coaxed it out and the thing just bolted.He/She is about 2-2 1/2 inches. Is this normal for a juvenile Pulchra to just bolt?My other juvenile Pulchra does not do this.

Any tarantula can bolt. Character of a species can be different from specimen to specimen.
If it actually had molted week ago, then give her some time alone. She might still have a bit of hardening left to do.

Cool, thanks!

Ts don't like to be disturbed, yours has gone through a lot..and you think something wrong? I suggest you start or continue reading about T behavior here at AB. Your level of interest in Ts is DIRECTLY proportional to your T thriving.

Wow!I guess checking on your T's wellbeing is not approved!Maybe next time I should just not even check if I what I purchased is even alive or if it's even in there. For you to come out and be insulting for someone asking for advise is really asinine. Everyone starts out as a beginner, every body makes mistakes. So next time you have something smug to say keep it to yourself! For everyone else, thank you for the great advise!

The people here really care about tarantulas. Coaxing a T out of a hide is pretty risky. They are usually in there for a reason. (It can even be fatal if the tarantula was molting, I know yours was recently molted but this is why some people can have strong reactions). It can be hard to go without seeing them, especially a new T. It can also be a bit funny to ask to an experienced T keeper since it is like asking why a new cat you got is hiding under the bed and ran off when you tried to get it out when your other cat just sits around. Tarantulas can have differing personalities as well. I was told a p.pulcher is a generally more docile tarantula and it has been one of my most flighty/defensive tarantulas and I own pokies haha.

Try to not take things too personally, and even though you may feel silly asking something, it is better to ask and learn than to potentially have bad husbandry practices.

I've read that if the enclosure is too small, there's a higher chance of bolting. I don't know if this is the case though since no pictures.

He/she is just a baby. If it still does it when it gets older, it would be unusual for that species, although im sure not unheard of.

Here's a pic of the enclosure it came with.

That's a pretty g pulchra. The enclosure looks like a size used commonly for those kinds of T's. I doubt the size is a problem, although if it tries to bolt when opening the enclosure to add feeders or regular maintenance, that's when i would try an enclosure just a tad bigger. I think its fine though. Mine goes into her hide a lot and sometimes stands on top of it like yours is doing there.

Calling people names isnt conductive to promoting the hobby or educating people about tarantulas.
I hear you, he was obviously joking....Then again this question is so basic that if the OP spent half the time he/she spent typing the response about how offended he/she was on searching the boards this thread would never have gone up o_O

Good luck with the bolty T though

That's ok, I'm not the least offended by that cause I know these people are the type to say things behind the keyboard and not have the guts to say it in front of people's FACES!

Maybe I chose the wrong word when I said "coaxed". But like I said, I just wanted to check if what I purchased was OK, healthy, alive ,or even inside. Its not like I bought the T from a store or an online dealer,I bought it from a stranger. With all the crazy stuff going on, people are out for a quick buck and just making sure that there was an actual T and the right T in the enclosure.

It's not that you did anything wrong. It's just an explanation as to why the T was acting out of character. Then again, you could very well just have an "out of character" G. pulchra. Too early to tell. I have about 8 out of my 12 that I joke are "broken" because they don't behave like they "should" based on the average for the species.

You do realize that I was simply stating that all spiders can be skittish when disturbed by large animals, right?
People are apes.
There was no name calling.
