Bold (?) Jumper Can’t Climb

So I rescued this guy from work, after finding him upside down on the floor (as if fallen from our very high ceiling or from high up the wall). He’s got green translucent green mouth bits, a few light colored white stripes/spots on his abdomen and rump, and is about the size of a dime. I’m fairly certain he’s a Phidippus Audax but I could be wrong. After his fall he stayed low. He climbed the wall a bit, but not higher than my desktop and then spent the rest of the day on the floor level. I brought him home and made him a temporary home in a 27oz empty cashew container with holes poked all around the body of the container, cleaned with a mild plant-based soap and dried out with a paper towel at the bottom, and a piece of bark. He seemed to like the paper towel and hung out in a fold for a few days. I made sure to spritz some fine mists of water in there daily and I wasn’t sure his age or preference so I ordered some blue bottle flies and picked up some fruit flies at Petsmart while we wait. I have no idea if he’s eaten as I found out today that my air holes are just large enough for the fruit flies to escape (whoops). But this is the first weekend day I’ve been home and the most active I’ve seen him and I noticed something else. He has been trying to climb up the sides, but keeps sliding and falling down. He climbed up the bark once, but when he tried to transition to the plastic container side he once again fell. Is he older and losing his grip? Or am I doing something wrong? 123DA9EA-C9CF-475B-B992-C438338E23CB.jpeg

Old spiders (approaching end of life) lose the ability to climb smooth surfaces. You can also offer mealworms, small crickets etc to it and you can pre-kill the feeder as bold jumpers are known to scavenge throughout their life. In the interim you can offer some honey water in a quetip to it.

Going to molt or age

As you know they are visual- I bet he would appreciate some vines to crawl on/ hide behind etc- your setup is extremely barren for a tiny spider.

generally wide open spaces make most animals nervous

Thank you all! I will spruce up his digs for him and try some new foods/pre-killing the food. ☺

I spruced up his home. Haven’t seen him climb too high yet, but he did promptly attack his fly I gave him this morning. He didn’t eat the dead one I gave him previously, but the live ones he seems enthusiastic about. Here are his new digs, complete with ferns, small sections of paper towel tube to hide in, his piece of bark from the old home, and paper towel lining (he seems to like to burrow in it). Here you can kind of see him hanging out near the paper towel tube, and you can’t tell here but he’s got his fly. ☺

He has been climbing! Some of the odd grooves in his new bear-shaped home are sometimes a bit tough, but then he grabs onto the leaves or bark for support. His favorite spot is still in his little web cocoon in the bottom, but he’s spent quite a bit of time up high today.
