Hello all!

As a new member of this forum and a first time T owner, id like to introduce Bluey. A colbalt blue unsexxed 3cm juve.

My partner got them for me while we were at a tarantula convention, ive been really interested in them and researching them for a few years and im very excited to see them grow and share my journey along the way.

Pictures below show their current setup and a really cool burrow that they made. IMG_20240325_113917.jpg IMG_20240324_151717.jpg

Any advice, tips, dms or general discussion is greatly appreciated as im new to the hobby.

Read up a lot. Cobalt Blue - not the smartest choice for a first time owner at all. It’s a OW, that is a pethole.

Give it depth to burrow, they will appreciate it

Ive got their new enclosure to be ordered which has depth, as said above ive looked into these for YEARS.

I wasnt expecting this to be my first T but fate has its way of doing things 👀✨

Be vigilant during rehousing.

Give them depth, they burrow.

#1 tip for using this forum, search any questions/concerns you may have and read those threads before posting. There’s a lot of great information on here and it’ll keep you from getting roasted by the old timers

To expand on this, a clarifying question (ie I've dove into the depths of the AB archives and I have a question about this post and what it means) will almost always be met with a clarifying answer and a bit of amazement you did the research prior. A question that's been asked and answered 5 times within the previous year will almost always be answered by a direct one-liner from @viper69  .

As far as this particular species, it's a moisture dependent, Old World obligate fossorial. Substrate choice matters, substrate depth matters, ventilation (both amount and placement) matters.

Wow! and here I was scared of starting with more than one T... you really jumped in the deep end fast. I was thinking like A Chalcodes or N tripepii for my first but you know you could always go with an OW  .

I started a thread (here) a while ago asking about any beginner OWs which I got mostly NO's to. You see I absolutely love the way P ornata and H maculata look (and what scientists have discovered with the H Mac venom).

If possible maybe try keeping an NW as well so that you could "practice" with it; allowing you to get used to feeding and rehousing with a slower species. It's awesome that you've been able to do years of research putting you in a better spot than others. So hopefully that helps you a lot.

Just be careful and I wish you and your Ts the best of luck. (Ps absolutely beautiful species... well when not in a hole )

Oh and don't forget to use tongs!

Ive just fed them for the first time with tongs and just.....WOW the power this little thing has.

Very very eager and they got their red runner instantly.

My partners first T was a G.Pulchripes named Fluffy and recently got a V.Suntiger named Deigo so ive practised a little and learnt from him.

Thank you so much and ive just googled the ones youve mentioned, theyre gorgeous specimins!!

That's awesome that you have someone with experience to help you out... that will definitely come in handy.
Love the name fluffy

Yes they are I don't quite know why but I love the ones that look white. If I ever get one its name will be ghost (lol)

The speed of spiders is freaking ridiculous like what on earth deserves the right to be that fast:eek::lol:. It's not just Ts either like most spiders move at the freaking speed of light.

Researched you have- good
Do you know how many make that claim, only to ask the most basic questions, or more often than not are asking for tips- tons! Not saying you are one, but technically no one knows if you did or didn’t-welcome to the net.

Generally IME here people who have asked for tips here know very little.

Here’s a tip- rather than ask vague questions, ask specific, pointed questions. List them out

1.
2.

It makes things so much easier to ask/reply.

Fact
I was just introducing myself + my T, no questions were asked I just welcomed the communities interaction.

In future though if / when I have questions I will list them out as youve given example. Thank you

Bluey's First Nom!

Very excited today as my CB (Bluey) has settled in nicely and I have successfully done my first feeding.

The power and speed from this small juve is insane, I love them.

So far they have also extended their burrow and have a big appetite however I want to find what works for us and try and have somewhat of a schedule.

Red runners as suggested by The Spider Shop was great as Bluey seems to love them!

Ill try and post some more pictures as and when I do things on Blueys terms.

Don’t use tongs to hold prey, that’s a very bad habit. They are capable ambush predators, no one needs to spoon feed a tarantula. Tongs are great for potentially damaging fangs, and serving as a climbing point for your T to escape and die.

Schedule for? If you mean feeding- it’s not needed at all.

Works for us?

There is nothing wrong with asking questions ?
But if You do a little Research (Detective Work), You can find most answers your looking for.

lol
It would help if there was a list of water dependent Ts and ones that dry is preferred/ although I’ve kept most properly and still had molt problems . I never had a haplo before wonder if there ever visible ?

Yeah ive seen a lot about the tongs and it was suggested to do so if you wanted to see your T take it as the prey will run into the burrow, I also held the butt of the red runner so it had more body than tong to go for but in future ill just drop it in

Schedule meaning I make note of when I feed, rehouse or molt so I can keep up with everything, Im autistic and have ADHD so lists and calenders make me comfortable for me as I have multiple pets + CB

"Works for us" meaning me + my partner

Hope this clears some things up, just trying to learn and enjoy my time with my pet :)

I don't feed with tongs, but a lot of People do.
I'm just saying better safe than sorry, Tongs with Soft tips for feeding ... Soft Wood or Soft Plastic
