I guess they wanted to see it take a defensive posture. Unnecessary, but I didn't really see any harm being done, they seemed to be pretty gentle with the prodding. Nothing the snake wouldn't get over pretty quickly, IMO.
Whether it is wise to poke a black mamba is another question entirely, of course.

Exhausted poor soon-to-be-dead snake

Blacktara, that snake wasnt even close to be aggressive so I dont understand your comment (or why you post this video at all since it has little value).
This in another animal which bad reputation is far more horrific then how they really are. They do have potential to move and strike, and no dry bites are known from this species. A tired snake dont resist much though.

Video offered a good view of the snake's head and the black inside of its mouth. Also shows that it's not a super aggressive killer beast

I had a colleague who was an ER physician who once told me he was at a conference where a South African doc apparently presented a report on a case series of mamba bite - and apparently quite a view didnt require antivenom or mechanical ventilation. I have not been able to locate a reference to it and would like to know if anyone knows of it

Obviously, if true, that case series would suggest that there are dry bites, and maybe lots of them. Found conflicting stuff on-line

Such gorgeous snakes, I hope they did help it instead of killing or annoying it some more!

Black Mambas are normally far more deffensive and reactive than this, agreeing with crotalus the snake is possibly on its was out, from stress? maybe.

definatly something someone who is not used to elapids should be proding
