so i was cleaning out my hisser tank tonight. most are normal color, a few are mostly black with a small patch of light on the abdomen. a few look interesting, but nothing amazing.

then i saw this beast: (you can see our dog helping me)

there's the faintest hint of brown striping on the abdomen, but it's very hard to see. it's the only one like that in there. i don't think it's anything amazing, but it looked interesting and i figured i'd share.

Neat..I have several of the black and brown mottled specimens, but I don't think there is anything that dark.

In these forums, that should make them *more* attractive. ;)

Sweet hisser. My huge one I've had for a few years nicknamed "big mama" is dark, but nothing that black.

Hmm . . . reminds me of my favorite beer.

Awesome. I love black morphs and am attempting to breed them out of a few individuals I purchased recently.

That specimen is something that I would definetly single out for a breeding program, I hope you do the same! :D

if i remember correctly, it's a male. and yes, i plan on letting him "do this thing" and not become one of the feeders. {D

Well thats nice to hear! :D If I was you I would move him into another cage so you can better control who he mates with and ensure you get his offspring instead of other random males as well. Keep an eye out for black babies and keep us posted.

That one's a female. Try to find your darkest males to pair her with.

Edit: that's what it looks like in this lighting, anyway. Can you get a profile shot? Or maybe it's antennae against a contrasting background (males have slightly fuzzy antennae).

yeah, guess i should sort 'em out. my colony is pretty small, so it shouldn't be too hard. i just don't know if i have another spare escape-proof container. :wall:

WOW! That's amazing! I've never thought that they would come in all black like that. Wonder if you'll get more? Is it genetic?

A kritter keeper with paper towels held in place by the lid is surprisingly escape-proof (tank, sheet of towels covering opening, lid). I originally did that so the babies wouldn't squeeze out from between the cracks, but it also works nicely to keep meal moths out.

Wonder if you'll get more? Is it genetic?
We hope so! That's why everyone's telling Kitty_b to try breeding this one. {D

Almost makes me want to try selective breeding of my hissers.

well, i didn't have any pure-dark males for her, so i've set her up with a pair of boys who are darker, but with interesting tan abdominal patching.

we'll see if they like each other. makes me realize i need a bigger hisser colony.
