The guy who photographed that presented at casual night during last years AAS conference, really funny guy with a dream job. Essentially, National Geographic was paying for him and small team to catalog diversity of assassin spiders and another group I don't recall at the moment in Africa and Madagascar. In turn, NG gets to publish the wicked photographs.

He talked about how amazed he was at the popularity of that particular photo and brought up this webpage someone made with his photo as his statement that he had "made it" :D.

Not really. They are highly derived Araneomorphs that share very few characteristics with the Mesothelidae, which are the most primitive spiders.

Man...madagascar has the coolest bugs in the world...Why cant we have something like that over here?

I've looked for some pictures of these species and I found one in "the biology of spiders". Buth the picture shown in the link looks a bit strange. The "neck" of the animals looks like two sticks? Or is that another organ egainst the "neck"?
