In the north end of Humboldt Bay, Eureka Ca. is a large island with several large trees. A nesting ground for hundreds of gray and great blue Herons and some other species here and there, surrounded by industrialization and a city. They have been there as far back as the local history has been recorded. Viewable from all sides; a safe and secure little ecosystem. With a tiny slice of irony.
Only accessible by boat or swimming, occasionally a homo erectus once removed decides to go over and make a nuisance of themselves. Only to discover a built in defense mechanism. Decade upon decade of bird poop. The adventurous soul instantly discovers every flying insect native to the north coast by the zillions. Protective gear like bee keepers use is useless as they crawl as well as swarm every inch of you. Just getting near the island by boat is game on. Floating buffet!
