Big Momma - Fowler's Toad

View attachment 51438

Big Momma sheds a couple days later. She's trying to get the last piece of skin stuck on her left shoulder to detach so she can finish swallowing. Notice the bubble on top of her head. The new skin is wet right after shed.

Big Momma is 3.5" from stem to stern and 2.25" across. I don't know how much she weighs. She has a male that lives with her in a 10g aquarium with eco-earth and hide pots. The male is about 1/2 her size. We also have 3 American Toads. Each toad has a unique personality (such as it is). These species tame up readily and eat anything that moves that is small enough to fit in their mouths.

Katydids are a bit too large. I fed one to Big Momma last fall. She chomped it and then spent about a minute trying to stuff it down with her forelegs. I finally had to rescue the katydid. Ever see "Ghostbusters"? ("I've been slimed!")

On a carpet?

Ever thought of seeing if they could be coaxed to breed?

I have thought about breeding. I think I would need to brumate the toads, which I haven't done.

As far as baby toads/ tadpoles go, there is no market, so I'd have to release them into the wild, which would not be a problem for them.

These guys are all over here in the summer.
