The person didn't forget the T's, he just didn't have the paperwork all worked out, and therefor he couldn't take the spiders with him... sad, but true.

I wonder why 135 died? They must have been abandoned for quite a while - those rosies are tough!

Not take them WITH him, he BROUGHT them into the country. G. roseas are not native to Mexico.

Love the part about "possible death." Haven't heard of a deadly tarantula yet... except in the press!

Sorry to hear about so many of them dying. The part I didn't like about the story (other than all those T's dying) was the part about a tarantula bite possibly causing death. I wish people knew whay they were talking about before they wrote things like that.

Sadly the T's died even more sad was the "possible death" reference. We are sending an e-mail the news agency that reported this false info. When the general public is given false information it only perpetuates the irrational fear the public has. editor.reuters@reuters.com This is the E-mail address of the reporting agency. Let's see if we can get a retraction to that statement.

Repeat thread.....

Tarantulas are popular as pets but their bite can cause pain comparable with a bee sting or, in some species, possible death.

Meaning that tarantulas are deadly to some species.... not meaning humans most likely. Unless we're being thought of as seperate species within the human species. Me of course being the male white species would not die from a T bite ;P

~~~Psycho~~~
Ps. I already posted this in the watering hole
That is a point - but it's vague. I read it more that some species [of tarantula] can cause death in humans. I figure if I read it that way, there is probably a lot of less arachnid-informed people out there that did the same, and are *scared*
We can round and round and round and round........but the fact remains that a T's venom will not kill a human. But then comes the allergy effect and until someone dies from an allergy it is a false statement. You can 'what if' anything into the ground.
Don't get me wrong. I believe the laws of probability dictate that one day someone will probably die from a T bite. However from a journalistic point of view, if there is no supporting facts then it hasn't happened.
Ahhh, you are right Psycho. But, I did the same as most people, just skimmed it really fast and caught the phrase "possible death." That really jumps out.
*rolls his eyes* I figure if we're all so scared of the arachnophobes of closing down our hobby why dont we write editorials to the editor's to counter the negitive media effects...
Jill and I have been in the process of doing so. If the paper publishes it we'll put up a link. And its not so much because of fear of the hobby shutting down but increasing the hobby to have people to sell spiders to. We hope that maybe a small domino effect could start. If I had a dollar for every person I have come into contact with that had no idea they could get or keep such things as tarantulas.
Ohhhh the ambiguitity! I interprated that as "in some species" meaning NOT some species of the bitten victim will die, but that 'some species of tarantula will kill humans'; i.e. the rosie won't kill, though other tarantulas may. Just to emphasise what could of happened, if the spiders within wern't rosies...
Hope that makes sense?
?
Didn't some little girl die from a bite in India or something like that?
I was just wondering. I have heard that and I did not know if it was just a rumor or not.
It is pretty retarded how the media words things just to get your attention.
Oh well, I guess some things will never change.
I figure if we all get together and post editorials in papers ect ect try and push our hobby more into the media fase thigns like this [points at the constant overeaction to t's] wont happen.. But then I guess Im ignorant in thinking that we can push past the cloud of fear brought up in them since childhood?
