You can find a pic of the same grasshopper here (in fact, the pic came from New Orleans) - http://www.whatsthatbug.com/grasshoppers.html
Scroll down until you get to the date of 8/31/2005.
It is referred to it as a dark form of the Eastern Lubber.
I think that 5" is a stretch. I don't know of any US native grasshopper longer than approx. 3-3 1/2". I could be wrong though.
I know that everything looks bigger down south - there has to be a theory, law, or principle to describe that effect.

Romalea sp. probably microptera
Romalea microptera is now recognized as Romalea guttata - just an FYI.
And I agree with spydrhunter - it is a Romalea guttata, dark form.
A common nickname for the dark form ones down south is - Devil's Horses. Pretty fitting if you ask me.

The Eastern lubbers are all over here People tend not to like em cause they eat everything. They are extremely heat tolerant and their favorite place for sun in the sun is the middle of the road at high noon. They can big but I dont think 5 inches. Easterns hatch out black with a red or yellow stripe down the middle. Westerns are black.
