Crpy, we have those here in CA but they are lime green with peacock eyes on the sides. The tail horn is a little longer and red. We call them Tomato Worms. They are a Sphinx Moth. I used to keep them all the time when I was a kid due to all the tomato plants my mom had.

Well, Ive raised many tobacco horn worms and tomato horn worms (Manduca) and they have the long horns, also swallow tails , giants, tigers and spice bush etc and they all have the eye spots. This is different, I dont have it so I cant morph it, a friend sent the pic to me.

Crpy, I just checked my Peterson Field Guide "Western Butterflies" and I do not think it is a Swallowtail. The caterpillars are wrong and the range maps do not coincide with your area. I do believe it is some type of moth. I could be wrong. I do not have a moth guide so hopefully somebody with the knowledge will post for you. I am also interested. By the way, did you find it on a citrus plant??

It is a Hawkmoth / Sphinx moth larva - it was onthe ground because it is looking for a place to pupate. Put it in a 1 gallon tub with feiild with soil or peat and it will dig down and turn into a pupa.
