Hello. I'm relatively new to the hobby, and I was wondering what sort of fake plants I should be looking for, for my A. Avicularia.
I went to a few pet stores and I saw some that suction to the glass, and some that were to be placed in the substrate. I'm the kinda person who overthinks things like this because I want the best for the animals I take care of, so basically what I'm asking is what type of fake plant is best for arboreals like my A. Avic? Should I go for the fabric sort of fake plants, the cheap ones that suction to the glass, or what
I think way too much... smh me

I'd avoid the San Diego Zoo concrete trees. Size and mass problems.

Seriously, you are getting pretty fussy. Seems like the major concern would be some of the cheap crap plastics that leach out their chemistry into the environment. Hydrogen chlorides, cyanides, (I'd avoid anything made with ABS plastics as they all decompose to produce cyanides though most are stable and only decompose under high heat), PCBs and other carcinogens. If you are really worried read labels and reference check the plastic for long term stability. MSDS sheets, manufacturer data sheets etc.

As Venom1080 said, 'silk' like materials can be composed of third world gads knows what recycled toxic trash.

for my avics I use the one's that have the suction cups to attach to the walls near the top of their enclosures. They will spend all of their time near the top there so, for them, those are the best way to provide that cover that they want/ need. Most other arboreals, at least the ones I have, (P. irminia, P. cambridgei) and my semi-arboreal, (C. cyanopubescens, T. ockerti) seem to prefer to start their homes in the substrate and build upwards along a branch of a fake ground plant and a cork bark. :)

Ive never had luck w/suction cups staying on glass for a long time. I buy the ZooMed plants and cut them to size for my containers. Plastic plants that go into the ground either get webbed up, or dug up. They are completely useless. You are better off getting cork bark slabs and tubes and cutting it to size if needed for ground furniture.

I prefer the look of the fabric plants to the aquarium style all plastic ones personally. Often check the fish aisle at my lps for ideas. Also surprisingly, michaels or Beverly's style craft stores often have cheaper and more varied fake plant inventory.

Mrs Haas has her T tanks decorated in plaid no doubt with 1970s chocolate brown, and mustard yellow, and booger green I bet :wacky:

I've read here on the boards when it comes to fake plants for T habitats, that the craft ones you get from hobby lobby/ michaels etc have a chance of having chemicals in the fabric. Perfumes, dyes, even insecticides and stuff, do you pre treat the plants from those sources? If not, have you not had any adverse reactions from them with your T's?

Got a little heads up on plastic plants and flowers yesterday. While rare, the ones that are tested and labeled as UV stabilized are the way to go. That indicates they are also much less likely to leach chemicals into the environment.
