Hey guys! I'm thinking of starting my first breeding project (most likely in Jan 2023 because I want to be fully prepared). Currently I'm choosing a species to breed. Are there any species in your experience is easier to have successful breedings and produce babies?
PS I've heard OBTs and Hysterocrates species are pretty easy to breed. Don't know if that's true. :pompous:

It depends on your experience level. Do something you like and people will buy. For example, H gigas and S cal are difficult to sell even for cheap. OBT probably isn’t a bad choice if you’re comfortable working with them. My first thing I produced successfully was P irminia, but my first pairing was T vagans. Versicolor would be another worth considering. There does seem to be seasonal breeding/producing preferences among different species though.

This was my first species to get a sac from… but I had both m1 and m6 sacs end up being duds. I have heard from others they can be tricky, but I agree pairing was easy and I know the sac sizes aren’t huge.

What are you breeding for? Experience? Profit? or something else?

Hard to recommend a species to start with withotu knowing what is your goal or experience level.

Don't breed an L.p. right @Wolfram1

Understand some species put eggs from the small hundreds to well over 1000

PS I've heard OBTs

True they are. That is why they have been in the hobby for decades at low cost, and often given away as a freebie in some countries. This applies to other species as well.

.... 1677, 1678, 1679, ... Yea, don't do it. ...1683, 1684, ... They are incredible spiders but they play with your nerves in so many ways!

Don't you dare drop it lady!!!

... 16#? .....wait were was i again? sch.. now i have to start all over again :troll:

Jokes aside, personally i would ask myself which spiders you already have and enjoy keeping. And reproduce those once they are ready rather than buying some just to "breed".

I dove into the proverbial deep end myself and I haven't actually kept this genus yet, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I think Harpactira sp might be a good choice if you're comfortable with OW's. There are quite a few different described and undescribed species in the hobby now, they don't have massively large eggsacks, by all accounts they're pretty hardy and tolerant, and there is demand that should make it relatively easy to wholesale or trade the slings once your successful.

Never been my experience....not only do they (avics) pair easily, but I cant think of more than one bad sac I have ever gotten from them......sac sizes are also manageable and while not lucrative, avic slings are always in demand IME.

For any New World tarantula species, I'd recommend Avicularia as the starter genus. Because they are more eaier to breed on the new world tarantula spectrum and they don't have a large numbers of eggs. So it won't be too hard to care for all the baby tarantula slings in comparison to some tarantulas that have large egg count numbers.

For Old World tarantula species, I'd recommend Monocentropus balfouri, they are the easiest tarantula to breed in my entire experience of breeding tarantulas.

I’ve had luck with Y diversipes and C versicolor, but for whatever reason my first two Avic sacs weren’t good. I got 4 more paired female m1 so hopefully something works out

I watched a video from Dave's Little Beasties on Breeding Basics, and he mentioned that species like OBT's,H.Pulchripes,A.Avics & M.balfouri make great tarantulas to start a breeding project. On the other hand he also mentioned that there are species that tend to be more difficult to breed but he didn't mention what genus or species so i would like know what just for acknowledgement 😊

I would say breed whatever you enjoy keeping and want more of, just be mindful of what others said about number of babies and how hard some species are to sell, even wholesale to breeders. If there's a breeder you've bought from or that's local to you I would pick their brain. Ask if they've buy X species wholesale from you if you produce slings. If they're local that's even better cuz then you wouldn't have to deal with shipping the slings. It's not a money issue, it's a you don't wanna be stuck with 1600 LPs issue like above^ lol. Even if someone agreed to buy slings wholesale it's quite a chore packing a large quantity

Edit: also I would just add that if there's a species you really enjoy like say basic obt P. murinus. They're pretty common as discussed above. But there's multiple color forms of them in the hobby. But it's not like they're that different besides color. Breed the color forms that aren't as common and I'm sure a dealer would be more apt to take them off your hands or trade them for regular OBTs if you wanted a few.
