Hi all, I'm hoping to get some advice on making some natural hides safe for my beetles. I collected some shells from the beach, pictured below, and thought they would make great hides for my blue death feigning and darkling beetles. However, the broken edges of the shells are slightly sharp, and I want to blunt them in order to prevent any of the beetles from getting hurt. I've tried filing the edges flat with a heavy-duty nail file, but it hasn't been completely effective. Can anyone think of a method to beetle-proof the edges? Maybe I need a different tool for filing. I've also considered spreading a layer of clay or glue over the edges to cover them up, but I'm not sure any such products would be completely nontoxic, and I'm worried my beetles might try to eat the substances. Does anyone have better ideas? I would really appreciate it - thanks all!
