Beetles in the genus Eleodes are known as "darkling" or "pinacate beetles," and colloquially as "stinkbugs" or "clown beetles." Eleodes, derived from the Greek term for "olivelike" describes the general body shape and jet black coloration.
@Poonjab It is not Eleodes, it is not even a tenebrionid. The only thing OPs animal has in common with Eleodes is black color...
@tailsfurry16 It is some Carabidae (ground beetle), most likely Harpalus sp.. If I were to guess species, my bet would be Harpalus caliginosus, but it is complicated family with many species.
