Hi guys,

Just putting a question up for my brother. He just bought his fourth bearded dragon and has had the worst luck with them. He started off with a male and each of the following three have turned out to be males as well. As it is he's had to rehome the second of these beardies and has asked me to take care of the newest one (beardie number three currently lives with our parents). Is there any reliable and easy way of sexing them seeing as he'd like to have a litter of beardies some day?

thanks for any help

Andreas

Well i know you live outside of the US so I'm not sure if you have reptile shows around there. I know that most breeders have them reliably sexed. However You can probe them or "pop" them.

I do not suggest either of these methods are done by an untrained person, and should actually be done by a vet. This is why I will not put HOW to do it on here, but really a good reptile vet should be able to sex them reliably.

You could also purchase a proven fullgrown female. That would be 100 percent accurate :) Alot more expensive but I think it would be more expensive to keep rehoming them.

We do have reptile shows here in Sweden but they're unfortunately usually at least a 6-12 hour trip further south. My brother has checked his beardies and hasn't managed to prove that any of them were female even after checking those links. My guess is that he'll spring for a grown and probably allready bred female att some later date.

Thanks for the answers

A good vet might also be able to DNA test them, I don't think its too expensive (in the US) they would draw a few drops of blood and send it to a lab.

I had the same problem sexing my baby I got for my beadered male. I was positive it was a male the way it acted after I got it and it always tried to bite me (I've never had that happen). I evded up giving it back to the petstore and it calmed down and stopped freaking out and was actually found to be female. I even had brought it to the vet and she had said male. Just goes to show you, even the experts can be fooled sometimes.
