I heard sand was bad and can cause impaction, I have no idea what is supposed to be used?

the sand is not good for baby beardies(impaction, gets in the eyes, etc)they should be on papertowel, but for adults it should be fine.

unless your beardie is having problems with the sand(in the eyes, swallowing too much from eating) newspaper is used it's not attractive but it works. some people use that green mat, which is ok for awhile, but it will soil pretty quickly and alot of bacteria, ammonia will set in very fast. and get real stinky.

I have never had a problem with impaction in reptiles either in my own collection of pets, or where I work (300+ Lizards on sand). As long as they have a healthy diet and arent gulping up sand, they should be fine. Try Calcisand, for that is supposed to dissolve (to a degree).

It doesn't. By all accounts, it clumps up just as bad, if not worse. Even worse than that is the fact that it IS a source of calcium, so the lizard will WANT to eat it even more than usual.

Cal sand is very bad for them. It puts forth way too much calcium and is not their natural habitat. Babies certainly should not be on sand but as they get older they are fine with it...make sure its washed play sand though...good lookin' animal:)

Like i said chunk the cal sand...not only is it rediculously expensive its not good for them. You can get a fifty pound bag of play sand at wal-mart for like 5 bucks...way better!

Yea sands fine. I've seen more surgery from calci-sand than real sand. I trust my beardie on it and he's about 9. No problems at all. Its ok bugman, we'll just have to beat you savagley now.

Actually, in the wild Beardies live on pact clay, not sand. They live in shrubland/semi-arid parts of Australia. The best substrate for Beardies is Tile. Its easy to just wipe up the poop, it keeps their nails fairly dull, and it looks really nice. Rabbit pellets are good too. And adults are usually ok on sand, but I have heard bad stories, and sand is a pain in the ass...

I know that Calcisand is supposed to clump up also. None of the breeders I work with, preserves I work at, or pets I keep have ever had a problem with sand impactions though. All of these establishments and people keep their animals well-fed and full of the essential nutrients, so sand-eating is minimal (if at all occuring).
