I've owned / bred Beardies for almost 10 years now and this is the set up I have and use. ( I have tried literally everything out there )

When they are babies, use paper towels it's easy to clean and they don't eat it. some people are for or against using newspaper because of the ink, i've never risked it and just used paper towels. Alot of beardie enthusiasts take flooring tile and tile the inside of the cages, this is the best, but a lot of work and you always have to clean it.

Once they are older, ( about one year + ) I use washed play sand. This is my method to keep it clean. I put lots, and I mean LOTS of play sand in the bottom ( it's cheap too ) of the cage, so when they poop, I have a cup where I just scoop it all up with a bunch of sand around it, and throw it away outside in our garden or anywhere. In 9 years of using play sand, I have never had one case of impactation. I also really recommend soaking your bearded dragons in water 3 times a week. It hydrates them so theyre is no need for a water dish, and it keep them ' loose ' and free from impactation. As long as you soak them, play sand should be just fine once they are older.

Here is a pic of one of my set ups. currently breeding my 9 year old Female ( lower ) and 18 month make ( higher )

I got both of my Dragons wen they were 6 weeks old. The female i never really put a lot of logs or anything to climb on just a basking spot and cool spot, this made her grow up to be a bit lazy haha. With the male, i did the complete opposite, i but tons of things to climb on, in fact he had to climb up a big log just to get to his basking spot, so he was use to running around and all over the place and now he has grown up to be very active and loves to climb.

also, alot of good info can be found here: http://www.beardeddragon.org/bjive/index.php

Hope you find some of this info helpful!

I use play sand and have no problem with it. I tend to aim my roaches for the feeding dishes though, so maybe that reduces the potential for impaction. My set up looks very much the same as the photo.

Same here, I have my beardie eat out of a feeding dish. Even if there's little risk for impaction I don't want it eating substrate either way.
