Some friends stopped by this weekend for a nice visit. My buddy is a fellow snake enthusiast so we decided to take a drive to see a local colubrid/heloderm breeder. His facility is spectacular! His new snake room is a herpers dream. All custom built cages with red oak faces. I had not been to his place in years and I was really impressed with all his facility changes. We left his place feeling like giddy kids. All of his animals are clean and extremely well kept. A truly amazing and top notch breeding operation. Below is a picture of me holding a couple of his beaded lizards. :)

I haven't had the good fortune to see one in the wild either. One of these days! They are incredible creatures. I would love to be able to keep them. Here is a picture of one of his captive bred babies. Beautiful!

Amazing Gilbert,
I love beadeds. I hope to own some in the future when I can afford them. What was the breeders asking price on his beaded babies (assuming he's bred them)?

Good luck. As you know, they are surface minimalists (that don't flouresce under blacklight ;) ) so your chances are slimmer than for most sympatric lizard species.

Cheers,

Mike,

His asking price on beadeds is 1,200. He breeds them regularly. You can check out his website at www.applegatereptiles.com. All of his stuff is legit. I believe he has two right now that he will let go. They are gorgeous too! He is a good guy and has a great reputation.

Dave,

Gilas are definitely not the easiest thing to find, but I do know quite a few herpers, and even a few non-herpers, that have spotted them while hiking or looking for other herps. I may be moving to AZ soon so hopefully I'll stumble across one someday. Maybe I'll get really lucky and find one curled up next to a nice fat, fully fluoresced arizonensis! A boy can dream can't he? :)

Probably because they're quite venomous. Not very agile, however.

I know, I just thought he figured they were agile and deadly, negatory on both accounts ;)

I'll tell him you said hi next time I see him. Although I think you will see him before I will since you are going to Daytona! I bought my very first graybanded kingsnake from him over 12 years ago. Then I returned for some more graybands, sinaloans, ruthveni, etc. It had been about 8 or 9 years since I had last been to his place. He has made some great changes. You have to visit his facility! His show booth is nothing like visiting his snake rooms in person. After visiting him I always realize I don't have enough snakes. Cool stuff.
Have fun in Daytona! Drool over all the Green Tree Pythons for me.

I thought Beaded Lizards and Gilas were different species and only Gilas has venom. The Beaded lizards just imitated the Gilas as a defense. Is this correct or not?

Gilas venom glands are on the lower jaw and not injected through fangs. Not easy for them to envenomate a person according to the nature specials I have seen on them. Either way a jaw that thick has gotta hurt when it clamps down on you.

You can get beeaded lizard belts and boots around here too. Not as popular as ostrich or anaconda though.

Beadeds and gilas are the worlds only two venomous lizards. As you said they do not have grooved fangs like elapids and viperids. The venom is introduced into your system through the bite wound as the gila or beaded chews. The bite is extremely painful from what I hear. They haven't caused many fatalities however.

Gilbert,
I know of Bob Applegate. When I used to work at a reptile store in the city we used to get all of our colubrids and jungle carpets from him. All of his stock was always in excelent condition. When I can afford them and am able to house them I will have them (maybe if I say this to myself often enough I will:)) Till then I will have to settle for your pics.

I know that arn't very agile. The reason I said that was because I know how dangerous they can be.
