Wet the tub first...makes it quite slick then even for the most agile climbers.

If you don't mind me asking, but why are you useing a bathtub? I never heard a bathtub being used for anything to do with spiders. Is there something Im missing something?

What....you haven't been bathing your spiders???What kind of keeper are you? :? :?

Seriously..Using the tub for transferring a spider from one enclosure to another.Makes catching a lot easier if it happens to escape while transferring... and prevents it from being able to get under couches..down vents..all the places that are hard to retrieve a spider from.

Ok, now i get it. I just trick the spider in a box(or somethng) and keep it there untill the tank is ready(from cleaning or something).

Well, even if the spider can get out of the tub, you are not supposed to leave it in there. The tub is just a good place to do anything in which spiders have to be removed from anything because if they do escape, it is easy to catch them. Always have a deli cup or something ready. I just wrote in another post that it is easier to catch a spider in the bathtub than in a enclosure, and I usually let mine get out of whatever they're in and into the bath tub before i get them. Look to the tub!
By the way, when referring to an Usumabra, what does OBT stand for?

I know I easily caught it. I was transfering some of my collection to take on a display at a local school...Half the kids ran.. half the kids swarmmed.. made me remember why I hate doing public things...but anyway I had never used the bathtub meathod before and decided to give it a try and sort of just watched as the angery cheeto walked away and up the wall. I didn't think they could climb it.. lol..but after observering a ornge spot causuly walk up a mix between dirt yellow and puke pink wall I caught it and went off on the display thingy...[I know.. but its late..] neither me nor the animal was stressed just thought I'd ask about the bath tub meathod..

I used the bathtub method for a while. Much like anything else, the more you work with them, the easier it gets. I've found my favorite way of packaging fast and flighty spiders for shipping is on the carpet a few feet away from anything. I keep a "catch cup" nearby, but the carpet seems to slow them down a bit. I think the hooks on their feet get hung up in it. Anymore I have very few that make a run for it. I chalk it up to more experience in moving them from one container to another. I still remember transferring my first adult Haplopelma species... my heart was pounding like a little boy copping his first feel.

... but that's another story.

Well that was a mishap. The bubble bath was too thick and I couldnt see the surface while trying to gather up some Heteroscodra maculata spiderlings from the bottom and I lost my breath and cardiac arrest set in. Good thing I had a lifeguard on duty who was well trained.

Don't forget while using the bathtub method, to plug up the drain AND the water faucet.

Cheers,

*This method is only for faster/ more aggressive T's...I put the T in a 10 gallon aquarium (there is about 5 inches of substrate)...If hes in a container or cup I turn it upside down so hes inside the aquarium but still in the cup...I take the cup/ container off and then look for him...When I find him, I put the cup over him...I put the lid, in front, on the ground and coax him onto the lid (slowly moving the cup/ container) when hes directly on top of the lid, I close it from the bottom side up...In case he does make a break for it...I have the aquarium top right there...

Oh, never thought about the water faucet, thanks! Also put tape over spa jets if you've got them in your tub.

Any spider I'm unsure of, I move in the bathtub. And have the space under the door plugged with a towel. With five cats loose in the house, I'd much rather be hunting eight-legged escapees in the bathroom than amongst the masses of clutter in other rooms, five assistants all helpfully joining in the search.
