So, since the Burmese Python strangled that baby here in FL, all of the pythons and anacondas in the Everglades, etc etc... everybody has been on the edge about snakes. I've recently been wanting to get a Ball Python and have been getting some flack for it. I'm about to be a new father.....

Now, I have tarantulas and I do plan on placing them into a cabinet with a lock on it and a light inside once my baby is old enough... I would also plan on keeping a lock on the snake. I'm really not worried about such a thing happening because I'm not a parent that looks away when the baby is on a stroll... but you never know...

Is it just a bad idea for me to get a ball python at the moment or is all the flack just because people don't know what they're talking about?

Ball pythons are typically one of the most docile snakes available, and don't grow to a size that could be considered dangerous. Unless there is serious negligence involved, I don't see how one could cause harm. That said, I'd look at where the flack is coming from. I'd normally say to ignore the ignorant, but with a new baby on the way the last thing you'll want is extra stress from friction with your in-laws or wife over your new pet. While getting the ball python isn't necessarily a bad idea, adding another stress point might be. At least at this point.

Anyone that's giving you any crap about getting a ball python is an idiot. Would they say anything about a cat? A dog? Those are MUCH more dangerous than a ball python. Ball pythons rarely get larger than 5 feet, and couldn't cause any damage to a toddler. Even if you draped one around a babies neck it wouldn't do anything, unless you first rubbed mice over your baby. The fear of reptiles is fueled entirely by ignorance.
