I got three spiderlings from swifts that have been eating pinheads for a few weeks and now I have dilema.
Every store I go to is out of crickets small or large so no feeding them cricket parts or crickets themselves. I cant use my lobster roach colony becuase its fairly new.
I really dont want to use fruit flys because of rumors that they dont provide a good amount of nutrients and I would gladly feed them tiny bits of beefheart but I dont want the stuff to rot but it seems I shall have to use it.
Any tips on fruit flys? The beefheart I dont want to use becuase I have a few fast slings that could run for a bit while trying to take the stuff out if it starts to rot.

I tried fruit flys and man, were they a complete PAIN! I think most of them ended up escaping. Even though they can't actually fly, they sure as hell escape easily enough!
I have used mealworms and superworms cut in small pieces, it's really gross, but it works. However, you'll still have the dilemma like you do with beefheart, taking out the remains.
I know how it feels, I have over 100 slings, and 70 of them are very fast arboreals.....each feeding takes lots of time, simply because alot of the slings decide to make a break for it, and I have to chase them down :)
good luck!

I like to freeze larger crickets to death in my Freezer (Thank God for extra Sling Vials since my previous slings have outgrown them.) and if they're especially large, I cut them in half. My tiny slings are scavengers and will eat dead prey. The larger (3/4 to 1 ") slings are a little more voracious and can take down small crickets.

well when you come across someone that sells the small ones (like 3-4 mm long) stock up. get like 40-80 of em and freeze the little guys. MrT mentioned freezing crickets and i was kinda skeptical but it works. as for right now, just get whatever crickets u can come across and get a nice pair of scissors and chop it up...

When freezing your prey items, how long does it take for them to defrost? Or can you just toss 'em in semi-frozen? I'd think not, but who knows?

Also, you can talk to the pet store owner. My 65 or so newborn a. avics are coming in next Tuesday, and I have already talked to the pet store, and have him ordering pinheads for me every Friday.

Along the same line of questions... What if you live in the black hole of Wisconsin, and no where, I mean NO WHERE does anyone sell pin heads or beef heart? I have been all over to every pet store, and butcher around and no one will help me.. So aside from freezing and dicing larger cricks, is there any other market food that can supplement? Chicken heart? Liver? Any other part less greasy?

You can get them from an online source delivered to your door.

Here's two suggestions:
Fluker Farms

Bug Co.

and I know there are others.

I have ordered from Flukers for years but I think I am going to switch to Bug Co. because of the prices (thanks MrsDeranged). Fluker has the contract deliveries which makes things quite easy.

Hope this helps.
