My box came from Danny (UrbanJungles) this morning and it was Christmas all over again. I had been so worried about the beautiful Haplopela longipes making the trip from New Jersey to Texas but she was kicking the stall and breathing fire by the time I took her container out of the box!
I had an old 10 gal empty at the house and that is waaay more floor space than I needed but I decided to fill in about 75% of the area leaving a strip across the front and down one side to be burrowed in. I'm hoping i'll see the old girl once in a while after she digs in.
I did her transfer outside in the yard so if she made a break for it she would be in the open and not running under my furniture or up a wall. I let her sit outside in the 55-60f temp for a few minutes before moving her and that seemed to put the brakes on her teleporting speed.
Her she is on the fresh new substrate but would not let go of the packing she had been resting on. I think it was her security blanket.

Here she is posing for me on top of her little pagoda lamp in her new home.

She's been very well behaved so far, but I'm sure after she's settled she'll change that!{D

I'm no expert (yet) but that looks like what I have seen to be an H. Minax. The Longipes have more gray on them with dark legs. However, if someone wants to correct me please do... I'm learning a lot about this genus (being my favorite) and some of it is a bit disheveled. I want to learn all I can so if I'm wrong please tell me.

I me be a little out of date here, but has anyone ever truly verified that H. minax is indeed in the hobby in the US?

No doubt, it is a beautiful T!! I'm getting some of these in the next couple of weeks!! But Longipes definitely have a more heavily patterned abdomen as Andy mentioned. Been looking that up today. As far as anyone knowing about Minax in the hobby here in the US... I do know that some of the trouble with that is that most importers who see a black or largely black tarantula in Asia slap Minax on the waybill! This definitely looks like what I know to be a Minax because of the vague black striping on the abdomen. Gorgeous beast though!!

H. minax-yeah thats what I thought too! I asked Danny that when I first saw the pics of her. I had a longipes last year and it was not near this dark, the striping on the abd was easily seen, and it was not this large. Danny said he has purchased it as a longipes, so that what I posted it as. I have the name on the outside of her enclosure as H. minax.;)
She still hasn't dug in far, just about 4" back in a corner but she's right against the glass where I can see her!

Here was my female Haplopelma longipes last year as I unpacked her:

If you Google Haplopelma minax images you get pics that look just like my black beauty, to a grayish/brown like my old longipes here....:? I'm calling her a minax, she won't care anyway as long as the crickets show up for dinner!
