You post really nice pictures. But I think that maybe you have gone over the deep edge.

You can't go over if you were already there. Insanity is what keeps me sane. :D

I can honestly say that i have never done it, but you ask an interesting question.

BTW, there's nothing wrong with being a little insane, or at least acting like it once in awhile;P

I rarely talk to mine as they don't really respond all that well to the carbon dioxide in our breath... Gives them the same feeling as being blown/breathed on, which they associate with predators. That with us being a huge warm blooded creature that wants them to be calm and walk into their hand... Not much use to talk to them, they don't hear it, though they will fell a vibration, but their ears won't ever cock to listen to what you're saying to them. But it does make more sense to talk to them than plants ;)

Though one lady I've introduced to T-keeping does talk to hers exactly this way... The little 2 B.albo seems to cover it's head with it's legs, cringing, like I do at baby talk... Oh well, to each their own

My talking to T's is usually limited to "Get back here you little son of a bitch!" and the like.

I talk to mine sometimes but I do so fully realizing that they are not perceiving it at as language. When I walk into my invert room (which is currently my boyfriend's closet until I get a new apartment), I say hello to them and ask them how they're doing. I don't think it's crazy because I am aware of the fact that they are not going to respond. =D ;)

What about the Tarantula Whisperer? Rosemary Kraft, I think? From the ATS?

I am sure she doesn't baby talk her Ts, but I seem to recall reading that she talked to hers constantly all the time she held them, and she has held some difficult species. Maybe the right cadence of voice/vibration actually soothes the Ts?

I was just going to mention Rosemary. After seeing her demonstration, I would not be too quick to dismiss a correlation. Rosemary doesn't actually "baby talk" to them but it's more of a wispering kind of talking.

Here's Rosemary's sweet Heteroscodra maculata. I do not recommend anyone handle this species.

p.s. You can kind of see my centipede tattoo in my ear too. :}

Usual T-handling disclaimer applies

My son Kenny holding the same T.

We were able to hold several T's that one would not usually consider docile one bit. Each one coaxed out by the sound of Rosemary's gentle voice. She swears by this method and hey, I don't see too many other people doing what she does so I believe her.

Baby Talk

My wife now has taken to baby talking what used to be my Male G. Rosea (She has stolen him for her own).

I love my wife with all my heart. I would die for her in a heartbeat if it came down to it.

That being said..... I cant help but hope that one of these days when she has her face near him going "poopsie whoopsie foo foo baby waby blah blah blah..." that he kicks a bunch of hairs right in her face!

Then again she would probably start going " oooh my little spidy widy kicked a little hairy wary in my facy wassee. Hims a grouchy little man".

Gosh I hate that.

I actually talk to them too. When I see any of my T's, I sometimes say something like: "Hey sweety, how are you doing..." Or "Hey where are you going" when I'm holding one and its running up my arm :)
Guess that's all....

I don't really babytalk Bungee either, but I do talk to him. Sometimes I tell him he's cute or remark on how spazzy he is on a particular day. Or I ask him if he's hungry - he never answers, of course. :)

One time I tried talking to him constaintly, keeping up a quiet, slow monologue while trying not to puff my breath too much, and he stopped running and sat on my hand for a good 15 minutes, looking at me while I chattered at him.

Afterwards he sat around on my index finger while I was typing and surfing the net. Normally he doesn't stay still at all.

Maybe the right vibes can soothe the savage beast? :D

As long as they don't call me on my cell phone.

**ring** "Don't answer that."
"It's Baxter."
"Cricket cricket cricket cricket cricket cricket..."

"Cricket Mix. Tarantulas ask for it by name."

*wolf whistles in Atrax's general direction* :D

As far as babytalking goes - I think all that highpitched nonsense would scare a T. It would scare me, even.

But maybe establishing a regular monolouge while holding or cleaning may help put a T at ease?

And Bungee's just one of a kind. :D

Other than a "Hello, guys!" when I go in the room and face them I can't say that I talk to them much. I make a lot of expository commentary regarding them while working with them, but that's more about my frequent talking to myself (make what you want of that ;P) than talking to them.

I suspect that speaking "baby talk" (or whatever) has a more direct effect upon the keeper, and indirectly on the T. If speaking helps the owner to calm him/herself down, the T may very well be able to sense that in the human, i.e. slower heart rate, lower blood pressure, etc. Plus, who knows, maybe the Ts can recognize their keepers.

I have found myself talking to them on occaision, but never baby talk. Most of the time it's "Get back in that container you little piece of fecal matter" ;P
