Okay he is 3 1/4" and was caught at Camp Ben Mcullough in central Texas. Camp Ben has a shallow river running through it, he was caught about 4 feet away from the edge of the water in a pile of rocks. He is Mostly brown with two rows of very small black dots running parallel down his back. His head is black with the exception of a white band about 3/4 of the way to the back of his head. From what i can tell he does not have vertically slit eyes. My questions are; what do i feed a snake that is this size, and what kind of snake is it? Thanks for reading, now here are the pics...The shiny white thing is a quarter.

You've got yourself a ringneck snake. There are 3 subspecies in Texas, but one seems to fit the description best - Diadophis punctatus arnyi. As for feeding, this guy will probably eat small inverts and slugs small enough to eat. If I were you, I'd release him where you found him and let him find his own food. It's so much easier that way with something that small. Nice catch though. :)

I would say that's a dekay's/brown snake, Storeria dekayi texana myself. Hatchling/juvenile dekay's have a whitish "collar". Does the collar go completely around or is there a break in the middle at the dorsum? The double row of dots that was mentioned, along with a black head, plus it was found in close proximity of water would suggest that's it a dekay's. I am confident that, that's what is pictured.
Small inverts like earthworms, slugs/snails, and probably small salamanders and froggies/tadpoles are on the menu.

Yea, Storeria dekayi. I found one a few nights ago in Austin. They don't hesitate to go into that defensive posture. Flatten out their head a little when they do that. Do a pretty good job at looking like they are about to strike. Caught one when I was a kid and my dad made me let it go because it looked a little scary to him. All bug stuff scares him. I guess it skips a generation.

I would give him some really small gold fish in his water dish. And worms are good to but lack nutritional value.
