I caught a baby snake when I was out at nite looking for junebug's for my tarantula and saw a baby snake by a fire ant hole getting attacked by them and I caught it, and I was wondering what to feed it. Do baby snakes eat Bug's?

It depends on what species of snake it is.

I'm pretty sure ants can't harm snakes. Their scales are too tough for the ants to get through. That's what I read one time anyway. Anyone know anything different?

I've seen fire ants strip a snake to the bone in about 20 minutes.

Guess I was wrong about that! I know I read something about it somewhere, but it was probably a specific species of ants and a specific species of snakes. I think it was actually on a program I watched called "Ant Wars." Anyway...thanks for clearing it up!

Im in west texas and it's a little red snake, I dont think it could eat mice because it's mouth isn't even as big as my pinky.

Can you describe what it looks like? Does it have stripes or banding? Is it one color all over or is the head colored different from the body? You'll have to be more specific if you want to find out what it is and what it eats. :)

Check through this page for pics of the different snakes found in Texas. If they don't have a pic for a species do a google image search for the scientific name and see what you come up with.

Good luck. :)

depends on the snake,,,some eat only rodents and cant properly digest insects and others just eat insects.

Is this it? http://www.enature.com/fieldguides/detail.asp?recnum=AR0103 *If* it's a baby coachwhip, it will eat grasshoppers, cicadas, and small lizards/rodents/other snakes. It could probably eat a pinky mouse, that's a good safe bet no matter what species of snake it is. The general rule is that a snake's prey item should be no bigger than 1-1.5 times the thickness of the thickest part of the snake's body.

I've never actually seen a pinky (pinkie?) mouse, but I imagine they'd be small enough for a snake that teeny. :) If you do feed it, be sure not to bother it for a couple days afterward. Do you have an enclosure set up for the little guy? You'll need to figure out the species and then look up their temperature needs before you try feeding him, because if they can't get the right amount of heat when digesting, bad things happen.
