I have six Eastern Hognose snake eggs right now. I thought there were five but saw another one underneath another egg. I've heard you can get them to eat mice if you start them young. Is this hard to do or is it easy to get them to start eating mice. And, since mice aren't their preferred food, are they missing something in their diet when they are eating mice instead of amphibians? Anybody out there had experience doing this with the hognose? Going out of town but can get to a computer.

If u star them out on pinky mice u wont have any problems with them later on. they wont miss out on anything when they feed of rodents. we have 4 hogies and they all feed of mice or smallsmall rats. they wont want anything like lizards , if they never had one from the start, so ur best bet is staring them out on pinkies right away, that saves u the hassle of switching them over later on..
congrates on ur eggs and good luck :D

Kerstin, do you have Easten Hognoses or Westerns? I ask because Westerns feed much more readily on rodents than Easterns do. Getting an Eastern Hognose to eat rodents is not easy, regardless of age/size. The best to try would be to scent the rodents with a toad (their main source of food in the wild).

I have read not feeding them amphibians shortens eastern hognose snakes life but I could be wrong but I have read this atleast three times probably more. another way is to scent it with tuna fish water.
