Recently got my first crested gecko, i think he’s a male??? Haven’t gotten a good look at him as he’s not very tame yet, he’s very young. First time really seeing his belly and was wondering if everything looks normal and healthy? I don’t ever see him eat but he does eat if I hand feed him.

Nice crestie. Usually you will want to look for femoral pores to determine if it is a male. You would need a much closer picture and a loupe for that at that age. But, when they get older it will become obvious if it is a male.

In regards if everything is ok. So far he looks to be a nice weight and alert which are great signs. I raise cresties as a hobby myself and have a few pairs i need to do this week. Usually with hatchlings I will put them in a smaller container to they can find their food easier but yours does not look like he has that problem. What foods are you giving him?

He/she looks ok. Nice weight, not fat not skinny. On lizards I tend to look posterior to the hips, where tail meets body. If the base of the tail is not thin and sunk in they are fine.

Thank you!! I’m giving him zoo meds crested gecko diet, I’ve had him about four weeks and I’ve never seen him show interest In the food unless I put it right up to his face. I tried to give him small crickets but he’s not interested he ate one once and I can’t get him to eat it since. I’ve tried cutting the heads of because I was told it’ll help him smell it better but he just doesn’t seem to want it

I never see any of my babies eat either haha. I actually use paper towels in their small cages and do see their droppings so I know they eat. Also, when they shed they will eat their shed skin so if you see that, do not panic. I gave a baby to a former student of mine who just saw that the other day and was worried.

A lot of crested gecko folks including myself use Pangea crested gecko diet and Rephasy's. Never heard of the zoomed and just looked it up. It seems like a copy of the two I mention so it is good stuff. My geckos LOVE the Pangea diet (fig in particular) and they have a lot of different flavors if you ever want to check them out.

The zoomed you are using also has the black soldier fly larvae mixed in so I would not worry if your gecko does not want to eat insects since that is also in the diet. For me though, I prekill a cricket or black soldier fly larva and use a small spaghetti stick to wriggle it in front of them of which they 90% of the time go for it. Many of my small ones are still not the greatest at their catching live prey skills which is why I prekill. This is also done in their small boxes so it makes it easier for us both. Never heard about the cutting heads off to help him smell it better and I doubt that helps. I know when it comes from insects they do get more focus when they see movement which is why I wiggle the prekill.
