I know common names aren't canon, but what does "baboon" refer to? (I know what a baboon is, but how is it associated with the tarantula?)

The name ‘Baboon spider’ was originally given to species of Theraphosidae from South Africa by locals. This was due to their defensive attitudes and hairy appearence which reminded them of baboons.

Nowadays it generally relates of any Theraphosidae from the entire continent of Africa.

I had always read that it was due to the resemblance of their legs to baboon fingers.

I have seen this too. A game keeper at Sabi Sands said the metatarsus & scopula of a T resembled a Baboon’s fingers.
