I know common names aren't canon, but what does "baboon" refer to? (I know what a baboon is, but how is it associated with the tarantula?)
Its in reference to tarantulas from Africa.I know common names aren't canon, but what does "baboon" refer to? (I know what a baboon is, but how is it associated with the tarantula?)
I had always read that it was due to the resemblance of their legs to baboon fingers. The name ‘Baboon spider’ was originally given to species of Theraphosidae from South Africa by locals. This was due to their defensive attitudes and hairy appearence which reminded them of baboons.
Nowadays it generally relates of any Theraphosidae from the entire continent of Africa.
I have seen this too. A game keeper at Sabi Sands said the metatarsus & scopula of a T resembled a Baboon’s fingers.I had always read that it was due to the resemblance of their legs to baboon fingers.
Some do have thick legs for Ts wish more species had this . Maybe there agressiveness too?I had always read that it was due to the resemblance of their legs to baboon fingers.
