I just recently looked over at my hissers and there were oodles of nymphs running around! I tried to not freak out so I cleaned out their cage and refilled it with fresh food and water. There are plenty of places for them to hide. Anything else I need to do? I put a few napkins in the water dish so the nymphs wouldn't drown. Is vaseline what I should use to make sure they don't climb? They are really cool!

I'm really excited about it! Roachie must have mated a good month before I got her because I've only had her for a month. I knew she was gravid but didn't know it was that far along.

Congrats. I've had my hissers for a long time and they have had many babies.
Here is my opinion about your questions:
Try the water crystals, instead of plain water with napkins in it is not healthy for them (bacteria). You can use a think layer of vaseline at the top of the tank. It will work but also remember that it can get messy.

I hear those are the best.

I am so excited to get my first baby hissers, I am ordering them tomorrow. Let me know what you do to keep the babies in.

Ack, that's a bit pricey. Can't I just change out napkins daily to avoid bacteria buildup?

Actually, watersorb is pretty cheap. 1oz of crystals per gallon of water, so it lasts a loooong time.

You could also try to find some agar agar at a local Chinese market, its all natural and works well. You can also make agar cubes with fuit juice, a really nice treat for your roaches. I havent been able to find a cheap agar supplier online, but I know it sells for cheap in Chinese markets.

Hey, Jbrd...glad to hear about the babies. I just got the first surviving batch myself. I have them fed on peanuts in one dish and a few dishes of a mixture of flour, spaghetti, carrots and potatoes.

My babies are all first and second instar...I think one moulted not too long ago but that one doesn't look too well, but the rest are fast and healthy.

I don't see them drinking any water out of the dish. Will they eat fruit like apples? That's what I have for them. Suggestions?

Hissers don't seem to really go for water crystal gel. I see mine nibbling on it sometimes, but they're not like some other roach species I keep that could live entirely off of water crystal gel as their main water source. Instead, hissers prefer to eat fruits and veggies, especially stuff like orange slices and carrots. If you can offer those at least every other day, you'll be good to go. Just make sure you offer only small portions so you don't end up with a lot of leftover gunk. Just a single orange slice as opposed to a whole orange. 3-4 pieces of those potato chip style carrots as opposed to a whole carrot, etc.

I throw in two or three baby carrotts and they last a couple of days no problem. I think i have about twenty to twentyfive hissers.

jbrd, I'm not really sure because the little buggers are so squirmy. I have four adults and an approximate guess on the lil uns would be about 30. I do mix up their diet a good deal, oranges, bananas, apples, stuff like that and they seem to be doing ok. Can the nymphs hiss or is it just me going crazy? I can grab some veggies for em and see how they react.

The one that moulted is doing fine, I guess it was just a little weak.

I toss one carrot, one potato, ten to fifteen strands of spaghetti, a cup of water and some peanuts or cashews into a food processor, let it go for a few minutes. It works great. One of the milk caps I have filled up is almost gone, they love the stuff.

Do you cook the spaghetti before you blend it all together? How long does this mix usually last?

No cooking necessary for the spaghetti. I always put it in milk caps and the blend was gone within three days the last time I used it in the cap I set on the warm side. The others remained untouched, so I rinsed it out before it fermented.

Drain any excess liquid before use.
